Landlords in Carmarthenshire are being reminded that there are just weeks left before the deadline to register under the new housing laws introduced in Wales. By November 23, all landlords must register and self-managing landlords and agents will need to obtain a licence, as a requirement of the Housing (Wales) Act 2014. To obtain a licence, self-managing landlords and agents must either complete training on-line or attend an approved training course. Carmarthenshire County Council was the first local authority in Wales to be certified as a landlord trainer. Rent Smart Wales is the service delivered by Cardiff City Council who have been designated by the Welsh Government to be the single licensing authority on behalf of all local authorities in Wales. They process registrations and grant licenses to all landlords and agents who need to comply with the legislation. People from Llanelli have been offered the chance to improve their skills with a new scheme. Carmarthenshire Communities First has teamed up Coleg Sir Gar to run a construction course giving unemployed people the skills they need to gain a job in the construction trade. The programme gives unemployed people a 10-week training experience, covering the basic essentials of a career in the construction industry. The course takes place at Trimsaran Family Centre and participants will be taught skills that they can put into practice, including how to tile and grout and how to complete a plumbing project on a tiled area. Supporters of the Withybush Hospital Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) recently presented a new training aid to the team which will be used to increase skill levels within the CDU and more widely. The aid will enable the nursing team to provide information to patients and perfect intravenous procedures. It will also be used in the training of district nurses who work with cancer patients in the community and also members of the nursing team based at Withybush Hospital CDU and Ward 10. The funds for the aid were raised by the Withybush Hospital CDU Appeal through its charity shop located at Riverside, Haverfordwest. Haematology Nurse Specialist Sister Tracey Thomas said: “We are grateful to those who support the CDU with donations and those who support the charity shop. An event designed to help people in Carmarthenshire looking for new skills, training and employment was a big hit, attracting more than 300 people. The event at Ffwrnes, Llanelli, was such a success that Carmarthenshire County Council’s Communities First team is considering repeating the event again. The free ‘Have a Go’ event was the idea of Carmarthenshire Communities First and Coleg Sir Gar and involved other organisations from across the county. The event provided expert advice and guidance on topics ranging from engineering courses to advice on writing a CV.
