The public are being asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour directed at swans in Sandy Water Park. It comes after reports of the lakeside birds being handled. Rangers have stepped up their patrols but the public will have an important role to play in being watchful when in the area. As native wild birds, swans enjoy statutory protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is an offence to intentionally injure, take or kill a wild swan. The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “These beautiful swans enhance the area at Sandy Water Park and are for the benefit of everyone visiting the area. It’s so sad and very unfortunate that swans and their nests are sometimes a target for vandals but if anyone is spotted carrying out any wrongdoing to them then they will be reported to the police.” The Act similarly protects the eggs and nests of swans. The Jenkins Bakery is doing its bit to cheer on Swansea City in the Premiership. The South Wales bakery has produced special biscuits in home and away colours to support the Swans. Russell Jenkins, operations director for the Jenkins Bakery, said: "We are very big on sport at the Jenkins Bakery and like to get behind our local teams. "The Swans are currently doing well in the Premiership and sitting nicely in mid-table. "Our Swans biscuits are on sale at all our outlets, but are particularly popular at our Swansea shops at Whitewalls, Sketty Park and Uplands." The biscuits are hand-made using the family firm's top quality shortbread recipe and skilfully decorated with coloured sugar-paste and icing. The biscuits sell for 75p. The Jenkins bakery employs 300 people, full and part-time, across 25 different stores in South Wales. The company has the Gold Standard Welsh Food Hygiene Award and the Investors in People award. Ammanford-based Irish band Henry Marten’s Ghost have recorded a special song to help mark the centenary of the high-flying Swans. The Swansea Centenary Song has been written by their singer Padraig Lalor. “Coming from the home of George Best in Belfast, I can appreciate what good football is all about. “The Swans have done us all proud in South Wales through their achievements in the Premier League. “As they are celebrating their centenary this year, I thought it only right and proper we should mark the occasion with a rousing song which I hope will become a firm favourite with fans.” The song pays tribute to the Jack Army and evokes memories of some of the greatest Swansea Town and Swansea City players. “There are references to the old North Bank days at The Vetch Field, but also plenty of links to modern-day successes,” said Padraig. “I thoroughly enjoyed putting the song together as the inspiration was provided by someone linked closely to the Swansea City management. “The ba...
