Girls at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman have gone to extra time to prove they’re ahead of the game when it comes to football. Carmarthenshire County Council’s Active Young People Team has been working closely with the school’s PE department to provide after-school football sessions every Thursday. More than 30 girls started playing during the autumn term, and with regular coaching, team work and determination they’ve gone from strength to strength with a string of achievements already in the back of the net. First, they competed in the Welsh Schools FA Cup competition and a local schools indoor competition where they progressed onto the next round. Several of the girls then joined their community Club, Ammanford Juniors AFC, and through engaging with the club coaches and training with the club, the school team stepped up a level. To date, they have won the Swansea City Premier Cup and will be representing Swansea City in Goodison Park, Everton FC, in May; and got through to the final of the Wels...

An £8million investment at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman has been welcomed by Carmarthenshire Council’s Executive Board. Council Leader Kevin Madge arranged for members to visit the Ammanford comprehensive which is undergoing major refurbishment work. It includes a new extension, the refurbishment of one of the existing buildings plus two new buildings. Cllr Madge said: “We were given a tour of the school and were very impressed with the work being carried out. I am delighted that pupils in the Amman Valley area are to benefit from a new and improved; modern secondary school. “The council is committed to providing first-class accommodation and facilities for every child in Carmarthenshire.” The extension plus remodelling and refurbishment of the existing building will become the new science block. A Special Educational Needs facility - including therapy room, medical inspection, and hygiene room, will be located in one of the new buildings. A massive £21million transformation of Ammanford’s Ysgol Dyffryn Aman is taking place, remarkably with the 1,600 pupils still at their desks there. Over the last nine months the first phase of works has been progressing to upgrade current facilities and provide additional accommodation to meet the needs for the delivery of secondary education in the southern area of Dinefwr. It is planned by September 2012 the school will have the first phase delivered of a new administration and 6th form block; a new 24-pupil special education needs block; a totally refurbished and extended science block; covered links between all buildings, extensive works to the IT infrastructure and new computers and whiteboards. The transformation will provide enhanced learning facilities supplemented by enlarged parking facilities to provide an additional 30-car parking spaces and considerable improvements to the external environment and circulation areas.
