The School of Education and Lifelong Learning was crowned Department of the Year at this year’s Student-Led Teaching Awards at Aberystwyth University. The winners of 11 awards, as nominated by students, were announced during a glitzy ceremony held in Medrus. Lecturers, support staff and student representatives were all honoured with accolades at the annual awards ceremony hosted by the Students’ Union, with the support of the University. This year’s coveted Department of the Year award was presented to the School of Education and Lifelong Learning. Elizabeth Titley, a postgraduate student in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “The ethos of the entire department is to ensure that every student succeeds - not only academically, but personally. A new undergraduate degree scheme aimed at those who are interested in using Education as a means for community and social development from a global perspective, has been launch by Aberystwyth University. The BA in Education and International Development is the latest addition to the portfolio of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at Aberystwyth and will welcome its first students in September 2015. Featuring modules in topics such as People and Partnerships, Global Education and International Development and Practise, the course is designed to enable students to contribute towards social cohesion and public resilience and in the long term lower rates of poverty. Students will learn to consider every factor affecting education and development, such as community issues, the role of the individuals and government, and the impact of poverty. A three-day international conference aimed at enhancing collaborative working among professionals in child education, training, social work, voluntary work, government and academia will be held at Aberystwyth University on 27th - 29th June. Organised by the University’s School of Education and Lifelong Learning, the conference will include contributions by experts from around the world with more than 70 papers presented over the three days. Countries represented will include England, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Belarus, The Netherlands, Finland, China, Sweden, Ireland, Azerbaijan, Portugal, New Zeland, Greece, Scotland and Wales.
