A new Welsh Language Scheme has been published by Aberystwyth University. The University has operated a Welsh Language Scheme since 2003 and the revised Scheme reflects the structural changes that took place in light of the University adopting a new Institute structure in August 2013. Following the establishment of the Institutes, seven Directors responsible for Welsh language and Culture were appointed; an innovative move which means that the Welsh language has a champion in every Institute. The ‘Policy Statement regarding the Welsh language’ has been launched in Carmarthenshire. The launch was part of Gŵyl Hwyl Llandybie Fun Festival, Gŵyl Fwyd Castell Newydd Emlyn Food Festival and Cwm Gwendraeth’s Mabolgampau Meithrin Sports held in Pontyberem Park. The document was prepared by Mentrau Sir Gâr Partnership Group, which includes the Welsh Language Board, Carmarthenshire County Council, Menter Bro Dinefwr, Menter Cwm Gwendraeth and Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr. The group promotes, supports and ensures the use of the Welsh language in every aspect of life in Carmarthenshire. The vision is to see establishments and organisations working together and with people across the county, from all backgrounds, to promote the Welsh language. Carmarthenshire County Council has published its fourth Welsh Language Scheme. The Scheme has been adopted by the full council and approved by the Welsh Language Board. The Scheme has been developed in line with the Welsh Language Act 1993 which requires public bodies in Wales to adopt and carry out Welsh Language Schemes. Cllr Clive Scourfield, executive board member with responsibility for the Welsh language, said: “The Scheme describes how the council will treat the Welsh and English languages equally in providing services and communicating with the public in Carmarthenshire. “This Scheme sets a new challenge for the authority in ensuring that it provides high standard services in Welsh.” An Action Plan has been drawn up to go with the Scheme which underlines what is planned to promote the Welsh language in the next three years.
