It was a case of rugby world cup fever when more than 100 children greeted rugby’s greatest prize, the Webb Ellis Cup, to The Dylan Thomas Boathouse . An entourage of three vehicles escorted the glass backed Landrover Defender carrying the cup on Sunday as part of the rugby world cup trophy tour. Children buzzed with excitement as it arrived at the Writing Shed for 2.30pm before being welcomed into the boathouse to a display of rugby themed activity. The air was electric as rugby loving youngsters got to touch the cup, posing for photographs at the same time. During the hour and a half celebrations the council’s sport and leisure team delivered a rugby themed Actif Storytime session to children from St Clears, Laugharne and Whitland rugby teams. Although limited access meant the event was private, those that did turn up had their pictures taken with the famous trophy. Ammanford Library opens its doors on Monday with a new, vibrant look and extra high tech services. A week of celebrations are planned to mark the event which will see S4C’s children's icon Sali Mali and Jac y Do’s Eifion Price joining in. There will be demonstrations, exhibitions, actif storytime and toddlebikes sessions plus lots more. The first 50 new library members through the door will also be treated to a goody bag. A host of improvement works have been carried out including outside rendering, internal relocation of departments, carpeting, painting, new shelving, major re stocking of new books and audio visual items, new computers, a teenage seating zone and a screen. A new adult lending library, will house non- fiction and fiction books as well as spoken word books and new MP3 spoken word books. Enjoy a safe and trouble-free enjoyment without getting carried away to A&E or the cells! If you’re already 18 remember to ‘Think Safe, Drink Safe’ tomorrow (Thursday) after picking up your A-level results – and if you’re still under 18 remember to have an alcohol-free celebration. To keep safe stay out of rivers and lakes, and don’t go into the sea if you’ve been drinking. The Community Safety Partnership wants to ensure students enjoy a safe and trouble-free post-results celebration. Remember that drinking can have harmful effects including alcoholic poisoning, hangovers, and reckless or anti-social behaviour. Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for Community Safety Cllr Pam Palmer said: “We want you people to enjoy yourselves celebrating your exam results after all that hard work – but please do so safely and without causing trouble.”

A week of celebrations will be held from October 20-27 to celebrate the saving of Llangyndeyrn and Cwm Gwendraeth Fach from drowning. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the then Swansea Corporation developed proposals for a dam and reservoir to be built in the Gwendraeth Fach valley to supply water to Swansea. The proposals involved the construction of a dam which would have resulted in the flooding of productive farmland, several farmhouses and a number of houses close to and within the village of Llangyndeyrn, and also upstream to the village of Porthyrhyd. The village of Llangyndeyrn itself would have been greatly affected with a large dam wall built on its eastern flank. Homes would have been lost, livelihoods destroyed and the community torn apart. The community established a defence committee to fight the Swansea Corporation’s plan.
