The new chair of Carmarthenshire County Council joined the Carmarthen Town Mayor and Deputy Mayor in welcoming the Olympic Torch as it passed through on its tour of the UK. Hywel Dda Health Board | Lighting the way for Bronglais Patients An Olympic torchbearer returned to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth to celebrate his once in a lifetime experience with those who helped nurse him back to health. Richard ‘Richie’ Denyer, 60, from Aberystwyth, ran his part of the 70 day, UK-wide Olympic Torch relay through Brynhoffnant in Ceredigion. A remarkable achievement as Richie suffered a stroke in 2001 whilst riding a motorbike, leaving him severely injured and wheelchair bound.  He was admitted to Bronglais Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he spent 28 days before he could be moved onto a ward.

Students and staff from Aberystwyth University are gearing themselves up to carry the Olympic Torch and join in the evening of celebrations at the University’s Vicarage Fields on Sunday 27 May. Two University staff members and two students have been selected out of hundreds of hopeful candidates to become official Olympic torchbearers. A specially designed Olympic torch in the shape of a daffodil is blazing a trail round Carmarthenshire schools. The county’s Sports development teams have organised the torch relay month for four weeks covering nearly 200-miles between 19 schools involving more than 12,000 Pupils County wide in secondary and special schools. County executive board member for leisure services Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “This is proving to be a magnificent inspiration for the county’s young people as a prelude to the official London 2012 torch relay.” The event started in Emlyn School on February 27 and finished up at Pantycelyn on March 26th with the torch spending at least a day in each of the county’s secondary and special schools. Carmarthenshire’s schools ‘Olympic Torch’ has been passed from QE High School to Ysgol Bro Myrddin on the banks of the River Towy. The Torch is en route from Emlyn School in Newcastle Emlyn to Ysgol Pantycelyn in Llandovery in a relay organised by Carmarthenshire Sports Development Team to inspire the county’s young people as a prelude to the official London 2012 Torch Relay. The Torch will spend time in each of Carmarthenshire’s 19 secondary schools and colleges. All stages of the journey will be completed on foot with a number of runners taking part including Sport Development Officers, Gold Young Ambassadors, local sports club volunteers, elite sportspeople and school pupils. Scientists at Aberystwyth University have nominated a humanoid robot to carry the Olympic Flame as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. The iCub has been nominated by Dr James Law from the Department of Computer Science to mark the centenary in 2012 of the birth of Alan Turing, the father of modern computer science. A child-like humanoid robot, the iCub is part of a research project at Aberystwyth University into how learning processes in young children can be translated into strategies for learning in robots. James said: “2012 will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth on Alan Turing, the founder of computer science and a figurehead for the code breaking efforts of WWII. A robot torch bearer would be a fitting tribute to Alan Turing, and an inspiration to future generations of scientists and engineers. “Alan Turing is widely known for his role in developing computing methods for code breaking in WWII, but this is only a small part of his truly inspiring work.
