Latest news from the Hywel Dda University Health Board -  We are delighted to announce that Glangwili’s fantastic new Midwife Led Unit has welcomed its first baby. The purpose built Midwife Led Unit opened on Monday 4 August and baby Lola May Harman was born on Thursday 7 August. Mum Sarah, baby and proud Dad Keiran from Cardigan are doing well. The Midwife Led Unit in Glangwili, Carmarthen, has been designed for women who want to deliver in a homely and relaxed atmosphere whilst being cared for by midwives who are experts in normal births. Glangwili’s Midwife Led Unit has four en-suite birthing rooms and birthing pools are also available for women who find that the use of water helps them to feel more comfortable during labour. Residents across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire will benefit from new facilities for mums and babies. The Hywel Dda University Health Board has already significantly invested in a new unit maternity unit at Bronglais Hospital and this investment continues in new and refurbished facilities at Glangwili and Withybush Hospitals. A new unit for premature and sick newborn babies at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen will have four high dependency cots, eight special care cots and one stabilisation cot. The new facilities will also have specialist teams offering premature and sick newborn babies the best levels of care for them and their families. New modern midwife led units are also been created at Glangwili and Withybush Hospitals with four additional delivery suites being built at Glangwili Hospital. Mums and babies will now benefit from a new maternity unit at Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth. The unit has been developed as part of the front of house scheme which totals more than £38million of investment directly into Ceredigion healthcare. The new maternity unit is a modern facility with more single and double room accommodation with en-suite facilities. Other facilities include a family room for women who wish to have home from home birth, mood lighting in some rooms, increased water birth facility and a state of the art security system for babies The new unit is based on level 4 of the surgical block and can only be accessed through security doors, there is a waiting area for family and friends. A new bereavement room for grieving parents has opened in the Maternity Unit at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest. Officially launched by Anna Ryder-Richardson, star of TV show Anna’s Welsh Zoo, the room gives families a chance to grieve in a peaceful setting. The room was funded by SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) along with donations from other local charities and was the creation of local couple Hayley and Will Vallance. Hayley said: “Five years ago our beautiful son George was stillborn and we just wanted somewhere to grieve away from the ward setting. “It’s great to see the finished room after everyone’s hard work. I wanted somewhere that didn’t feel like you were in a hospital and was not just for the parents but for all members of the family as well.” Julie Wall, Head of Maternity also commented: “This room will make a huge difference. To have a room for families affected by this will give them a quiet space to grieve in peace.”
