Tourists, visitors and residents are being reminded that the British Red Cross Summer Service is operating seven days a week from Tenby Hospital. The service was successfully piloted over weekends and bank holidays last summer and this year is also operating during the week. British Red Cross use a group of skilled individuals experienced in providing first aid at public events to give top quality care to people visiting the hospital. Over 50 people have already benefited from the free service so far this year. Nigel Davies, senior services manager for the Red Cross, said: “The service is being well received by locals and holidaymakers and we are happy to provide this additional services over the summer.” The Red Cross summer service is just one option if you are feeling unwell. The Choose Well campaign uses a colour-coded thermometer to help people link symptoms to the services and support that is right for their need. Tomorrow, July 1,  Bernardine Rees will take up the role of Chair of Hywel Dda University Health Board. Born in Fishguard, Bernardine trained as a nurse in Carmarthen and has lived in Ceredigion for the last 19 years. She retired from the NHS after 42 years working in Wales, some of her local roles in the west included Director of Nursing in Ceredigion, Chief Executive in Pembrokeshire Local Health Board and Director of Primary Community and Mental Health Services in the newly formed Hywel Dda, as well as way many other posts in different parts of Wales. Bernardine said “The values that brought me, and I’m sure most of our NHS staff, in to the NHS are still the ones I believe to be the drivers for the future. As part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations of National Volunteers Week, volunteers from the university health board’s Volunteering for Health project and from League of Friends attended a special event hosted by Hywel Dda University Health Board Chairman Chris Martin. The event celebrating the role of volunteers was a great success with other 60 guests in attendance including League of Friends of the Amman Valley Hospital; Friends of Glangwili General Hospital; League of Friends of The Llandovery Hospital; and Llanelli and District League of Hospital Friends. Volunteers who help patients and staff at hospitals in Ceredigion have been thanked. As part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations of National Volunteers Week, volunteers from the university health board’s Volunteering for Health project and from League of Friends attended a special event hosted by Vice-Chair Sian-Marie James. The League of Friends of Bronglais Hospital and Community and the League of Friends of Tregaron Hospital received a Chairman’s certificate of commendation for the invaluable support of their fundraising activities over a number of years which has helped to improve patient services and experiences. Cardigan Hospital and Community League of Friends will also receive the Certificate of Commendation but were unable to attend the presentation.
