Latest news from the Mayor of Carmarthen Charity Appeal Committee - At a well-attended meeting on the 26 February the Mayor of Carmarthen Charity Appeal Committee discussed a number of fundraising events to be held during 2013. Final arrangements for the annual Spring Coffee Morning which was to to be held on the 16 March at St Peter’s Civic Hall were discussed. Other events discussed were a barbecue (weather permitting) at the Mayor’s home in May, a Vintage Tea on the 08 June at St Peter’s Civic Hall and the annual Mayor’s Dinner/Dance in December. A fundraising event on the Gwili Railway was also proposed and would be discussed further at the next meeting in April. All proceeds raised by the Appeal Committee are directed to local charities. There was a special award to Castell Howell food boss Brian Jones at the Carmarthen Town Sports Awards evening held at the Carmarthen Quins rugby clubhouse. Mr Jones was presented with his 'special achievement' award by Carmarthen Town Mayor Councillor Phil Grice. The winners of the two senior sports personality categories were Carmarthen Harriers athletics star Dewi Griffiths and London 2012 Paralympics medallist Claire Williams. The Carmarthen Town AFC Schools Mini-Football Programme continued on Friday night with a half-time match during the Carmarthen v Port Talbot Welsh Premier League match. I am grateful to Phil Grice for the following match report - Model School 4 Johnstown Primary 0 A plucky young Johnstown Primary team played their hearts out on Friday, but went down by four goals to nil to to an older Model School team. Model were a very impressive outfit, sklifully passing the ball amongst themselves, but Johnstown kept them at bay for much of the first half, with Alex Bartlett having a sterling game for Johnstown, going close to scoring only to be thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping from Model's goalie. But Model had both a height and and an age superiority which in the end showed. Two goals came in the first half, and then two more came in the second. I am grateful to Phil Grice for the following match report - Spectators at Penllwyn Park on Saturday were treated to an outstanding display of football, which went into extra time, from a rampant Carmarthen Wanderers who dominated this cup clash against Bancffosfelen for 110 of the 120 minutes of the match. Two delightful corners from club captian Garry Dappo saw firstly Craig Evans outjump the Banc defence to nod in Wanderers first, then Lee Davies blasted in their second from the nodded down cross ball, followed by yet a further great goal agian from the agile Craig Evans. Wanderers at 3-0 up continued to dominate the match until the final ten minutes. Then Banc woke up and caught the Wanderers napping. Banc scored their first on the eightieth minute, their seond on the 90th, and the equaliser in extra time. Football match report from Phil Grice - Johnstown United 3 Llanelli Radicals 1 Johnstown United, promoted last year from Division Three, began their life in Division 2 with an emphatic win over the highly competent senior-division stalwarts Llanelli Radicals. This match, played in appalling weather conditions, was not a push-over for United. The first half hour was even with Llanelli going very close to scoring only to be denied by an outstanding display in goal from United's diminutive goal-keeper Jason King, leaping high in the air to with a double saving effort to keep Llanelli's two six-foot strikers wondering how they failed to score. After half an hour, however, Johnstown's talented midfield began to take command, and having won a corner saw new signing Aled Thomas sail above the opposition to head in Johnstown's first – and a possible candidate for their goal of the year. I am grateful to Phil Grice for the following junior football news - Johnstown United were declared Carmarthenshire Division 3 champions with still one match to play following a scintillation 8-3 win over Pembrey at United's Llangain pitch. This was an easy stroll for Johnstown with Steff Phillips and Nicky Thomas each netting two, and Rhodri Morgan Jason King, Adam Thomas, and Shariff Ahmed claiming one apiece. United's forwards were rampant in slicing through the Pembrey defence, with striker Jason King laying off ball after ball, and constantly one-twoing with Steff Phillips often leaving Pembrey stranded. The first goal came after two minutes, and at half-time it was 4-1. By then however, Pembrey had twigged the United tactics, and their offside trap caught out United time after time – otherwise Johnstown might well have had a dozen. Manager Reg Upton and Club Chair Wyn Evans can be justly proud of their young team - made up of former schoolboys from QE High and Bro Myrddin...

Match report from the latest mini-football match staged at Richmond Park, Carmarthen (at half-time during the Carmarthen 0 Neath 3 Welsh Premier League match). Report by Phil Grice - Ysgol Peniel 4 Model School 0 This children's mini-football match at half-time brought smiles back to the long faces watching the main Town v Neath game. Model started strongly enough with Ryan Pegren breaking through into Peniel's goal-mouth, but Peniel soon took command. A goal early in the first half saw from Ben Jones saw Peniel go one-nil up. The second half was all Peniel. An excellent strike from Caleb Williams followed by another from Jack Green took Peniel up to 3-0. Model organised a mini fightback with Lewis Morgan going close, but when Ben Jones scored his second and made made it 4-0 for Peniel, the match was over. Model's goal-keeeper Caleb Maddock ensured that Peniel only scored four by pulling off some excellent saves. But Peniel won this match because they were an all-round team...

I am grateful to Phil Grice, pictured above with the two teams, for the following match report - Johnstown Primary 0 Ysgol y Dderwen 0 Spectators at last Friday's Carmarthen Town home Premiership match against Port Talbot were treated to a first class half-time game of mini-football by these two talented school teams. Johnstown had the best of the first half almost scoring when Sion Price, flashing through the Dderwen defence was clattered down in a clumsy tackle. This might well have been a red card in the main match, but in true mini-football tradition the referee played the advantage and Dderwen's goalkeeper Thomas Jones pulled off a fine save, to deny Johnstown. Ysgol y Dderwen came into their own in the second half with a flurry of shots which saw Johnstown's goalkeeper Sion Copper pull off some fine saves. But these were two very even teams and a drawn match was a fair if...
