Nia Greville clinched the Welsh Girls golf title to round off a perfect week which included qualifying for the stages as the No1 seed. The 17-year-old from Ashburnham Golf Club, Pembrey, played well all week in Caernarfon and managed to maintain her strokeplay form through the matchplay stages, beating Huddersfield’s Megan Lockett 2 and 1 in the final. Ysgol y Strade, Llanelli, schoolgirl Greville was delighted to win the title in her last year before moving up to the Ladies and was also delighted to be picked in the Wales Girls team for the Home Internationals in St Anne’s next month. Greville beat Rebecca Ogden from Rhuddlan in the semi-final, while Lockett came through against Jordan Ryan of Newport at that stage. “It was fabulous to win, I was delighted to keep my cool and hold my nerve to carry on playing well,” said Greville. “I played well in the strokeplay section but the matchplay stage is different. The Carmarthenshire Junior Cup has been relaunched after an absence of five years and will be a triangular series of junior matches between Ashburnham, Glyn Abbey and Carmarthen golf clubs. The first match will take place on Friday, April 12, when Ashburnham host Glyn Abbey. Matches will consist of five pairs playing greensome foursome matchplay. There was plenty of individual success for Ashburnham Golf Club at the Trefloyne Junior Open near Tenby, with brother and sister Aled and Nia Greville winning their respective competitions. Ben Thomas was runner-up in the boys medal with a 75 net. Ellis Staines won the stabeleford competition by an impressive six-shot margin, with Tomos Davies the runner-up on 37 points.

Nia Greville (above) saw her hopes of landing the Welsh Girls' Golf Championship end at the quarter-final stage. The Ashburnham golfer reached the matchplay stages of the event at Cardiff after rounds of 83 and 72 saw her finish fourth in the qualifying tournament . Greville won her last-16 match against Harrie Llewellyn of the Vale of Glamorgan 4&3, but came unstuck in the quarter-final when beaten 2&1 by Lottie Turner of Aberdovey.

By any standards, it’s been quite a year for the Ashburnham Golf Club’s teenage golf star Nia Greville. At just 15, she has chalked up a Welsh title win, represented Wales in the European Championships in Sardinia and she is now heading north to compete in the Home Internationals in Scotland. In the middle of it all, she is putting her mind to completing 12 GSCE Level exams, anxiously awaiting the results of half of them later this month. “Yes, it’s been quite a year,” the modest Ysgol y Strade, Llanelli, pupil said as she took time out from a practice round at the Ashburnham Championship Links. “The golf has gone really well and I am lucky that it’s been both a busy and successful year.” In May, Nia won the Welsh Girls Under-16 Championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech. In July, she joined the Wales team in the European Girls Under-18 Team Championships in Sardinia. One of the rising stars at The Ashburnham Golf Club in Pembrey will be representing Wales in Italy later this summer. Nia Greville has been chosen to join the Welsh Girls Under-18 team taking part in the European Girls Championships in Sardinia in Italy in July. Nia’s place in the Wales team follows her recent victory in the Welsh Girls Under-16 Championship at the Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech. “That was an outstanding win and thoroughly deserved,” said Ashburnham club secretary Huw Morgan. “We are very proud of our junior golfers here at The Ashburnham and we are working very hard to encourage the next generation of golfers. “All of us here at the club are very proud of Nia’s recent win in Harlech and we wish all the very best on her trip to Sardinia.” Nia comes from one of Llanelli’s most famous sporting families.
