Aberystwyth University successfully retains Fairtrade status

Aberystwyth University has successful renewed its Fairtrade status with the Fairtrade Foundation. The University worked closely with Aberystwyth’s Student Union and the Arts Centre to secure this status which supports the development, working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. Rebecca Davies, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student and Staff Services at Aberystwyth University, said; ”We’re delighted to have been awarded this status once again this year. Our Fairtrade provision is important in helping to raise awareness amongst our students, staff and visitors of the need to ensure a better future for producers in the developing world. “All campus restaurants and cafes serve Fairtrade tea and coffee and offer a range of Fairtrade snacks and drinks and the number of products available has been increasing year on year. It’s another first for the team at Abaca, the organic mattress experts

The team at Abaca, the organic mattress and bed experts, has chalked up another first. The West Wales business has just completed its first export delivery to Qatar in the Middle East. “Our quality mattresses are already popular in the export market, but this is the first time we have secured business from what is the richest country in the world,” said Abaca MD Rhiannon Rowley. “The order was for two of our super king Raglan mattresses and an upholstered base. “There was a special request for one of the bespoke Raglan mattresses as it is ‘extra-extra’ deep, measuring 30cm deep. “They are luxurious mattresses and a bespoke order for the customer. “Client confidentiality means we cannot say who the buyer is, but our reputation in producing quality bespoke products to match the client’s specific needs obviously counted for a lot. “We had to hand-tuft the buttons on the mattress as our regular needle wasn't long enough! Llanelli Star Editor addresses Llanelli Rotary Club

The Editor of the Llanelli Star, Rebecca Davies, was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. Mrs Davies gave a very informative and entertaining talk on her work at the Star, expressing her desire for the newspaper to highlight the positive aspects of community life in and around Llanelli. She also brought Rotarians up to speed with the latest changes in the world of digital media and the development of the Llanelli Star's website. The vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Susan Roberts, junior vice-president.
