A keen crowd of knitters spend an afternoon with children at Parcyrhun School to celebrate Make a Difference Day. It was one of the events which took part across the UK for the day which celebrates volunteering. People from all walks of life have the opportunity to try out volunteering including charities, schools, community groups, universities, businesses, and individuals. Last year an estimated 70,000 people across the UK took part. The event at Parcyrhun was organised with the aim of creating intergenerational opportunities for older people to share their skills with the children. Nancy Jones of Parcyrhun said: “It’s lovely to see how the children can pick up new skills. I was brought up being shown by my mother how to knit, but through generations these skills are being lost. Parcyrhun Primary School has taken part in an event in celebration of National Walk to School week with Communities First and the Road Safety Team. The event took place at the Haven Vets car park, where Gary Go Safe guided the children to safety with the schools crossing patrol, before the start of school. Each child was given a high visibility vest, sticker and information of road safety. All parents and guardians were spoken to by the road safety team about staying safe when out and about near busy roads. Parents were also urged to make use of the car parking facilities near the vets to alleviate the congestion in the mornings outside the school and to protect the safety of the children. The school crossing patrol operates on Penybanc Road during opening and closing times of the school to ensure the safety of parents and their children walking to the school. Picnic table and bench sets have been donated to Parcyrhun Community School Garden and Pantyffynnon Social Club, thanks to a group of people who have taken part in a unique construction taster project. Pantyffynnon Communities First was one of only a few groups in Carmarthenshire to run the Building Your Own Future in Sir Gar project, which aims to provide people with basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, tiling and plastering. They constructed the bench sets as part of their carpentry session, and are now proud to see them being used by the local community. Carlie Whittle, a volunteer at Pantyffynnon Communities First and a participant on the course, said: “I really enjoyed the hands on experience that the course gave me. I was able to take away with some fantastic practical skills, and items I actually produced.
