The Institute of Welsh Politics at Aberystwyth University is delighted to announce that Professor Diarmait Mac Giolla Chriost, from Cardiff University will present its next public seminar on Tuesday 21 April 2015. Entitiled ‘Comisiynydd y Gymraeg: rheoleiddio, rhyddid a risg’, the seminar will analyse the Welsh Language Commissioner’s work and takes place at 6pm in the Department of International Politics. Professor Diarmait Mac Giolla Chríost is a member of the Research Unit on Language, Policy and Planning in the School of Welsh at Cardiff University. He is a native of Ireland and an authority on linguistic minorities and language planning. He has research interests in certain other specific fields, including the nature of the relationship between language and conflict, from a comparative, European perspective, and, also, language in city contexts. A 2015 General Election Hustings event will host the six Ceredigion candidates on Thursday 16th April at Aberystwyth University. Organised by the Institute of Welsh Politics and the Institute of Welsh Affairs, the event will be held in the Main Hall in the Department of International Politics on the Penglais Campus at 6.30pm. The evening will be chaired by Sara Gibson, BBC Cymru Wales, and will provide an opportunity to hear the candidates debate policies and answer questions from the audience. The 6 Ceredigion candidates who will be taking part in the hustings event are: Henrietta Hensher (Conservatives), Gethin James (UKIP), Mike Parker (Plaid Cymru), Huw Thomas (Labour), Daniel Thompson (Green Party), and Mark Williams (Liberal Democrats). The Institute of Welsh Politics is delighted to welcome Leanne Wood AM, Leader of Plaid Cymru, to deliver its 13th Annual Lecture today, Monday 12th November 2012. The lecture is entitled ‘Cymru ar ei Hennill / A Winning Wales’ and takes place at 7.00 pm in the Main Hall of the Department of International Politics on the Penglais Campus of Aberystwyth University. Leanne Wood was born in the Rhondda where she continues to live today. She was educated at Tonypandy Comprehensive School, the University of Glamorgan and Cardiff University. Before her election to the National Assembly in 2003, Leanne worked as a professional tutor and lectured in social policy at Cardiff University. She also worked as a probation officer and a support worker for Cwm Cynon Women's Aid during 2001 and 2002. She remains involved with Cwm Cynon Women’s Aid through her role as chair of their Board of Trustees. Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Welsh Politics will host a public lecture by the Welsh Government’s Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews, on Monday 14 May. His lecture is entitled ‘Education and the Welsh Public Sphere’, and will be held in the Main Hall of the Department of International Politics at 7.30pm. The evening will be chaired by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, April McMahon, and is open to the public. Dr Anwen Elias, Director of the Institute of Welsh Politics, said that “We look forward to welcoming Leighton Andrews, and to hear his reflections on education in Wales and the challenges for the future.
