The acclaimed Juno Practitioner status has been awarded to Aberystwyth University’s Department of Physics by the Institute of Physics’ Juno Assessment panel, becoming only the second University in Wales to be awarded this prestigious honour. The aim of the Juno project is to recognise and reward departments that can demonstrate they have taken action to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both men and women. Director of Equality at Aberystwyth University, Dr Debra Croft, is pleased that the department’s long-term efforts had been acknowledged. “I am delighted that the Physics department has been recognised in this Practitioner award. A top doctor at Glangwili General Hospital has been honoured by the Wales Deanery at an event hosted by the British Medical Association (BMA) in Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Dr Madhuri Kodliwadmath, Associate Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, was rewarded for her excellence in clinical service. All Welsh doctors and dentists in training were asked to nominate a consultant, GP, dentist or staff and associate specialty grade doctor, who they believed performed outstandingly. The awards are part of the ‘Supervising the Route to Excellence’ programme which aims to ensure excellence in medical training through the development and support of high quality educational, clinical supervisors and trainers throughout Wales. South Pembs Hospital in Pembroke Dock has become the first hospital setting to achieve the Investors in Carers Bronze level award. The Investors in Carers (IiC) scheme is designed to help health facilities such as GP practices and hospitals focus on and improve their carer awareness and enhance the help and support they give Carers. A carer is someone, of any age, who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. Anyone can become a carer; in most cases becoming a carer is not out of choice, it just happens.
