Carmarthenshire residents are being reminded that there are changes to bin collections over the Easter holidays. From Friday, March 25 until Friday, April 1, collections will take place one day later than usual. So for example, if your collection is due on Friday it won’t be picked up until Saturday and so on. Remember to recycle using your blue bags - it is estimated that 90 million chocolate Easter eggs are bought in the UK every year, that’s a lot of cardboard and plastic packaging! And if you are making a big Easter lunch for all the family, make sure you either compost your vegetable peelings or they go into your food bin along with any leftovers. The recycling centres in Trostre (Llanelli), Wernddu (Ammanford), Nantycaws (Carmarthen) and Whitland are open as usual over the Easter period except Llangadog which is closed Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. A new fleet of refuse collection vehicles will be delivered in the autumn. Costing approximately £4million, the fleet of 28 vehicles will provide a more efficient service to the public and help the council to achieve its recycling targets. The majority of the vehicles will have a separate pod at the front to keep food waste separate from blue/black bags. The delivery of the new vehicles will result in some changes to the refuse collection routes across the county. However, households affected by any changes will be notified directly nearer the time. Director of Environment Ruth Mullen said: “The new vehicles, together with the introduction of new collection routes, will result in a much more efficient service. As we introduce these changes we will do our best to keep disruption to residents to a minimum, leading to an improved service moving forward. “We are currently recycling around 60% of our rubbish and the new vehicles will help us to achieve the national recycling target of 70%...

A Carmarthen man has been fined £200 for continually putting his rubbish out on the wrong day and putting non-recyclable waste in blue bags. Antony Ricketts, age 20, of Barnsfield Terrace was also ordered to pay costs of £186.31 and a victim surcharge of £20 by Carmarthen Magistrates. He failed to attend court and was convicted in absence to an offence under Section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The court heard that since July 2012, the council’s environmental enforcement section had received numerous complaints of rubbish bags being put out on days when collections were not due. Officers spoke to Ricketts in person and provided him with information, however reports continued to be made to the council’s enforcement team, who visited the address and found evidence to link black bags, and contaminated blue recycling bags, to him on several occasions. Residents in Carmarthenshire are being urged to put their rubbish bags out for collection correctly or face a fine of up to £1,000. The advice comes following two residents in Llanelli who have been fined £100 each in July for putting their bins out incorrectly. The residents, who live on Langland Road and Annesley Street, were issued the fixed penalty notices as well as being given information regarding recycling and notices requesting that they comply with the recycling scheme in their area. Residents are warned that if they fail to comply with such a notice issued under Section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, they may be fined or reported for summons in a Magistrates court where the maximum fine on conviction is £1,000. Help is available for Carmarthenshire people who struggle to put their rubbish out. Those who are elderly, infirm or disabled can get help to place their refuse at the kerbside for collection. The county council can arrange to either collect the waste from the doorstep, or from a mutually convenient location. Technical Services Executive Board Member Cllr Colin Evans said: “Anyone who finds it difficult due to ill health or disability to put their rubbish out for collection can ask us for help. “We are happy to make alternative arrangements in these circumstances.” People who would like to take advantage of this service will need to fill in an application form which will have to be signed by a doctor or other health professional. Refuse collections in Carmarthenshire due to be made today will be done by Saturday. Due to the national strike, there are no collections in the county today. However, householders are being reassured that every effort will be made to collect them by Saturday. People whose normal collection day is today (Thursday) are advised to put their refuse and/or recycling and food bins out tomorrow (Friday). He failed to attend court and was convicted in absence to an offence under Section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The court heard that since Friday, July 13 2012 when Frost moved into Barnsfield Terrace, the council’s environmental enforcement section has received numerous complaints of rubbish bags being put out when it isn’t collection day. Following the first complaint, the officers attended the area and found evidence that the rubbish belonged to Frost. He told the officers that he had recently moved to Carmarthen from the Birmingham area and he was given advice regarding the council’s recycling scheme works and told what day his collection was. Some householders in the Llanelli, Burry Port and Gwendraeth areas are to be affected by a change in bin collection days. The change will involve a small number of residents living in parts of the Tyisha, Lliedi, Hengoed, Glanymor and Bigyn wards of Llanelli as well as the Llangennech, Bryn, Llwynhendy, Bynea, Pwll, Burry Port, Cross Hands, Tumble and Pontyberem areas. Not all households in these areas will change; those that are affected will receive a letter from the council with details of their new collection day. The changes will come into force this week. There are also some residents who will not experience a change of collection day, but may find their rubbish is collected at an earlier or later time. People are therefore being reminded to make sure they place their blue / black bags and food bin out for collection before 6am. Collections for the week beginning August 27th – Bank Holiday Monday - will be one day later than normal.
