Pupils from Pantycelyn School held an event to raise awareness of the Carmarthenshire Schools Torch Relay and the London 2012 Olympics. The ‘Silly Olympics 2012’ event was held on Wednesday March 14 and young people took part in activities including obstacle courses, a mystery munch, Haribo chopsticks, balloom slalom and various races. The events were a mixture of individual and team efforts and prizes were awarded by Assistant Head Teacher, Elin Forsyth, to each event winner along with a certificate of participation to all involved. Ownzone is an after school provision aimed at pupils in years 7-9; the programme is delivered in partnership between Carmarthenshire Council’ s Youth Service and Secondary School Teachers. Ownzone takes place in Pantycelyn School on Wednesdays between 3:15 – 5:15pm and activities include cookery, arts and crafts, computer games and homework support. BBC News - Ysgol Pantycelyn, Llandovery, judicial review refused A judge has refused a legal challenge to plans to merge two secondary schools in Carmarthenshire, according to the county council. Campaigners fighting to keep Ysgol Pantycelyn in Llandovery had applied for a judicial review. There are plans to merge the school with Tregib near Llandeilo and build a new school on a new site. The Pantycelyn Action Group has asked for a hearing before a different judge to review the refusal. That will take place on 8 March.

Pupils from Pantycelyn School have reached their goals thanks to a scheme run by Carmarthenshire Council’s Youth Service. During the past academic year, young people obtained a range of OCN qualifications including music sequencing, bike maintenance, photo editing and animation. Some of the projects were delivered in partnership by officers from the Reach the Heights Project – a Welsh Assembly Government project funded by the European Social Fund, aimed at engaging young people aged 11-19. Karen Williams, project organiser and School Based Youth Worker said:“Pupils from the school were referred to the project for various different reasons in order for us to help them achieve success in subjects not offered within the school. “The school was keen to see their pupils take advantage of the projects on offer and as a result every pupil who participated on the OCN scheme achieved a qualification. “Our aim is to pursue with the delivery of these courses and to ensure that more young people a...

Tregib and Pantycelyn schools in Carmarthenshire are working more closely together through new governance arrangements. Tregib headteacher Julie Griffiths has recently taken over as acting headteacher for Pantycelyn, and the two governing bodies are working in partnership. The move is expected to deliver benefits to students at both schools. Ken Griffiths, Chair of Tre-Gib governors, said: “The closer collaboration between the two schools which this change will facilitate is a positive step towards delivery of the broad based curriculum which our young people deserve and Welsh Assembly Government policy expects.” Pantycelyn Chair of Governors David Dyer said: “The road has been long and winding but I'm pleased to say that the whole community now see the necessity of developing the educational opportunities available to our children."
