Drivers are being urged to avoid the Pensarn area of Carmarthen at peak times this week if possible due to roadworks. There have been significant delays during peak time (8:30am-9:15am and 3:30pm to 5:30pm) on the A484 in and around the Morrison’s roundabout area due to road works carried out by Wales and West Utilities (Gas) and the contractors for the new Pensarn development. Both organisations would like to apologise for the inconvenience and thank everyone for their co-operation. They hope to improve the situation by next week. Motorists are advised to take alternative routes if possible.

Two people have been fined £75 for dropping litter in the Pensarn area in Carmarthen. A 47-year-old man from Johnstown and 24-year-old woman from Blaenycoed were caught throwing cigarette ends onto the ground by the council’s environmental enforcement officers. The officers were on patrol in the area at the time of the offences and issued fixed penalty notices. If they don’t pay, they could be prosecuted in court and fined up to £2,500 by magistrates. Smoking-related litter makes up the largest proportion of litter found on Carmarthenshire streets at 85%. Cigarette ends are also one of the most difficult and costly types of litter to clean up, as it falls into grates and cracks in the pavement and cannot be removed by normal cleaning. A new £12 million 100-bedroom four star hotel is proposed for Carmarthenshire. The development at Pensarn could create 100 jobs and deliver other long-term benefits. County executive board member for regeneration Cllr Clive Scourfield welcoming the news said the hotel was a triumph of confidence in the county. He said: “It is quite brilliant to see our officers working so hard with a successful local business keen to tap into the tourism growth we have developed in the county over the last decade.” The development follows completion of an agreement by the Welsh Assembly Government to sell a prime 7.5acre site at Parc Pensarn to Gryphon Leisure Ltd whose directors, Angela Saunders and her brother Barry Saunders, own and run the highly successful Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli. Plans for a 30,000 square foot office development in Carmarthen will be considered by Carmarthenshire planners. The county council’s planning committee will discuss an application for full planning permission for office space on a site alongside DEFRA in Heol Glasdwr, Parc Pensarn. The site is an area of the Parc Pensarn Business Park, off the A484 Roundabout Junction between the Morrisons Supermarket and Halfords Store, and to the immediate south of the A48 dual carriageway. The current application has been submitted on behalf of Dragon 24 LLP, a public/private partnership between R O Developments, a commercial property company developing speculative office, industrial, retail and residential floor space throughout the UK, and the Welsh Assembly Government.
