Commonwealth Games silver medallist Nikara Jenkins was among the winners at the Carmarthenshire Sports Personality Awards last night. At a glittering ceremony at Ffwrnes Theatre 12 sporting heroes from across the county were honoured at the 17th annual event in January. Rugby legends the late Ray Gravell and Stuart Gallacher were also invited into the Hall of Fame. Rhythmic gymnast Nikara was named Sports Personality of the Year for her outstanding achievements during 2014 which included a silver team medal at the games in Glasgow and securing two first and second places at the British Apparatus Championships. Eleven other sporting talents were recognised including - Young Sportswoman of the Year, Manon Lloyd, cycling Young Sportsman of the Year, Joe Holt for cycling Sports Volunteer of the Year, Kate Williams, hockey Young Volunteer of the Year, Zoe Swift, hockey Community Sport Coach of the Year, Dai Davies, archery High Performance Coach of the Year, Nia Evans, rhyt...

Carmarthenshire County Council has been recognised for its inclusive sports and leisure activities for disabled people. The Insport Ribbon has been awarded to the council for its commitment in providing a range of sporting opportunities available to disabled residents across the county. Swimming, golf, karate, table tennis, athletics and football are among those credited by the Disability Sport Wales programme. All council leisure centres have full disabled access and disabled facilities as well a team dedicated to helping those get involved in all types of sporting activities. Already Carmarthenshire has a number of sporting heroes who have represented Britain in the Paralympic and Commonwealth Games. Powerlifter Lisa Pudner, discus thrower Claire Williams, Wheelchair racer Ritchie Powell and Boccia player Dean Thomas are among ambassadors of disabled sports in the county. Schoolchildren across Carmarthenshire have competed in this year’s Disability Sport Wales gala. Some 77 swimmers from the county took part at the event held in Llanelli Leisure Centre. This year’s gala saw entries form Ysgol Bro Banw, Ysgol Dewi Sant, Ysgol Gymraeg Ffwrnes, Ysgol Gyfun Gwendraeth, , Ysgol Nantgaredig, Ysgol Pantycelyn, Parcyrhun Primary School, Queen Elizabeth High and Ysgol Y Strade. Huw Griffiths, Swim Wales Disability Manager, was there to identify swimmers to go on to Learn to Swim Lessons, local clubs and galas. Special additions to this year’s event were Paralympic and Olympic certificates and wrist bands, given to celebrate the international events taking place later this year.
