CBE honour for council chief

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Chief Executive Mark James has been awarded the CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
Mr James, aged 52, has been recognised for services to local government in Wales.
The award, he said, is recognition of the hard work going on to regenerate Carmarthenshire.
“This is a great honour for me, but is also good for the whole county, as this recognises all the hard work and commitment that has been put in to make it better, which is of great credit to the council, staff and councillors,” said Mr James.
“Whilst I am very proud to receive this Honour, I am also proud of what we have achieved in Carmarthenshire.
“There is still a lot to do - at a time when we face unprecedented financial challenges - however I am confident that with continued commitment from officers, members, and the public, we will take further steps forward in 2012.”
Mr James was appointed Chief Executive of Carmarthenshire County Council in 2002.
He had previously served as Chief Executive of Boston Borough Council.
As well as driving forward several multi-million pound regeneration projects, including town centre redevelopments in Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford, Mr James has also spear-headed schemes to regenerate the council’s housing stock and schools, whilst helping to develop the voluntary sector.
On a national level, Mr James serves as a non-executive director at the Welsh Government, and has chaired several boards and committees. Most recently, he was member of a Ministerial board that advised the Welsh Government on a £1.4billion investment in schools.
Council Leader, Cllr Meryl Gravell, said: “I have had the privilege of working very closely with Mark over several years, and have seen at first hand his dedication and commitment to regenerate and deliver new schemes for the benefit of Carmarthenshire, as well as his involvement on a national level. I am so pleased that he has been awarded this Honour. It is thoroughly deserved.”
Mr James lives in Carmarthen with his wife and four children.
He was born and raised in Merthyr Tydfil.
