Welsh Premier eyes on play-off game
Carmarthen Town AFC and other clubs from South Wales in the Welsh Premier League have begun planning for the next season.
They will be watching closely this afternoon to see if Swansea City succeed in their Championship play-off game at Wembley.
The clubs will have to look carefully at home fixtures next season as they will not want to clash with any home Swans fixtures in the Premiership.
The Old Gold of Carmarthen AFC have always requested that their home fixtures do not clash with any Swans home games, but that is not always possible.
Gareth Jones, the Carmarthen Town Chairman/Secretary, said:“We have always tried to rearrange our games when there are any clashes but this is not always possible when facing a club from North Wales.
"It is not practicable for them to travel for Friday night fixtures and we have already decided not to play any home games on a Sunday.
"Therefore, whether the Swans are promoted to the Premiership or not, we will continue with our policy of playing South and Mid Wales sides on a Friday evening and try to come to an arrangement with the North Wales sides which includes possibly switching venues.”
The next season will commence on the weekend beginning August 12, but Jones hoped to have more information available after the Annual General Meeting of the Welsh Premier League on Saturday.
Another contentious issue to be discussed is the readmitting of sides based in the English system back into the Welsh Cup tournament.
Swansea City and Wrexham have already indicated that they welcome the proposal, with Cardiff City yet to inform the Welsh FA.
The general feeling within the Carmarthen Town camp was of genuine surprise as the club had not been involved in any discussions concerning this proposal.
Jones indicated the club;s unhappiness with the situation.
“Winning the Welsh Cup is one of the avenues available in getting into Europe. With these sides entering once again the likelihood of winning the Welsh Cup would be lessened.
"Why we have not been part of the discussions is difficult to fathom? Also will these sides be willing to play on the specified Conference dates i.e. a Saturday and will they field their strongest line ups?”
Town manager Tomi Morgan has also been busy since the end of last season and has approached several players concerning their desire to join the Old Gold.
“We are able to sign players on June 1 and, hopefully, we shall able to announce the signing of at least one new player at that time.
"I was pleased with the performances of the completely new squad we built last season but you are always on the look out for added class in order to move into the top six in the league and also need to look to getting back into Europe once again.”
