European cash helps set up 20 new recycling sites in Carmarthenshire

A total of 20 new recycling sites have been provided across Carmarthenshire with the help of European funding.
The council’s waste and recycling section provides more than 170 mini recycling centres all over the county for residents to recycle a range of materials including glass, cans, paper, clothes and shoes.
The 20 new sites have been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
It is part of the £8million South West Wales Materials Efficiency project with Pembrokeshire County Council.
Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Colin Evans said: “We are continually looking to provide more recycling facilities for the public and the ERDF grant has helped us to provide an additional 20 recycling sites across the county for the benefit of residents.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for householders to recycle by providing recycling banks in their communities.
“It is important we recycle as much as we can and reduce the amount of rubbish which goes to landfill. We are now recycling over half of our rubbish and I would like to thank householders for all their efforts. Hopefully, by using these new recycling banks we can increase our recycling figures even further.”
Last year the council recycled around 54% of its rubbish, exceeding the 52% target set by Welsh Government.
The next target for Welsh authorities is 58% by 2015/16 rising to70% by 2025. Failure to achieve these figures could result in large financial penalties.
