Three finalists in bilingual healthcare category in Hywel Dda awards
Hywel Dda University Health Board has announced the three finalists in the ‘Providing Bilingual Healthcare category at this year’s Best of Health staff awards.
The Best of Health awards are organised annually by the University Health Board to recognise and reward the extraordinary achievements of its staff and volunteers, many of whom often go beyond the call of duty in their work for the benefit of patients and service users. This year, 100 entries were received from across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.
The winners will be announced at the Best of Health Awards ceremony, sponsored by Health Shield Friendly Society Ltd at Parc Y Scarlets in Llanelli on Friday 16 January.
Lisa Gostling, Director of Workforce & Organisational Development said: “These nominations reflect just some of the high quality patient care provided by many of our staff and volunteers and highlight the fantastic efforts and achievements above and beyond their normal day-to-day work. I wish all the nominees the very best of luck.”
Hywel Dda University Health Board is committed to promoting the use of the Welsh language amongst patients and staff. The ‘Providing Bilingual Healthcare’ category seeks to recognise Hywel Dda staff who have given a significant contribution to providing healthcare in the patient’s language of choice and the finalists for 2014 are:
Getting the Lowdown Wales – An Emotional Wellbeing Resource which is a bilingual DVD for use in primary and secondary schools providing health educators with a resource to enable them to educate young people about emotional wellbeing and mental health issues in Welsh or English. This innovative resource was developed by the Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and is unique to Hywel Dda University Health Board. Both teachers and students have found the resource to be good, easy to navigate and engaging through its interactive nature.
Angela Jones, Health Visitor for her efforts to actively promote the use of the Welsh language in work. She has launched a successful bilingual baby and parent group in Haverfordwest which is growing from strength to strength. Angela has also recently won an award in the Twf Shwmae awards for her work, demonstrating her commitment to providing bilingual healthcare.
The ERAS Orthopaedic Team in Prince Philip Hospital for producing bilingual patient information booklets and posters for hip and knee replacement patients. The team recognise that creating a bilingual environment reassures patients that their language choice is valued, helping the patient’s understanding of their care while in hospital and their recovery after surgery. Welsh speaking staff within the team are on hand to communicate with patients whose first language is Welsh and feedback from patients and their families has been positive.
Chief Executive of Health Shield Friendly Society Ltd Jonathan Burton said: “It is a big achievement to be recognised for the great work that you do in any profession, but even more so at the Hywel Dda Best of Health Staff Awards. On behalf of all of us here at Health Shield I would like to say congratulations to everyone who has been shortlisted.
“We would like to wish everyone the best of luck in the awards, and well done for reaching this stage. You deserve all the recognition you get as I know that you regularly go above and beyond the call of duty.”
