The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star

The latest 'On Song' column (about the choral scene in and around Llanelli) from the Llanelli Star -

Many of our choirs are taking a well-deserved summer break after a busy schedule of summer concert and eisteddfod engagements.
Côr Meibion Llanelli will be having a holiday from rehearsals after a busy concert programme which included the big choir competition at the Carmarthenshire National Eisteddfod held in Llanelli.
The choir were ‘outgunned’ by the bigger Pontarddulais Male Voice Choir but can take consolation from the fact they performed with distinction.
Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas said: “Eisteddfod competitions are always a huge test for any choir, but I thought the ‘boys’ of the choir did their very best. We didn’t win, but there was great honour in putting up a great fight in the competition.”
The choir will have a busy programme when they return to action in September.
The autumn programme includes a gala concert (with a special star guest to be announced shortly) at the Selwyn Samuel Centre on Saturday, September 20.
Before that, the choir will be helping Llanelli Rotary Club stage a First World War Centenary Concert on Saturday, September 6 at Greenfield Baptist Chapel.
The concert is being be held in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.
It will feature Côr Meibion Llanelli, the 215 City of Swansea Squadron Royal Air Force Cadets Corps of Drums and rising singing star Samuel Morris.
The evening will include readings by Monro Walters and Robert Lloyd.
The concert will close with a ‘Tribute to the Fallen’.
The following month, Côr Meibion Llanelli will feature in a Gala Concert to be held at the Christian Temple Church, Ammanford, on Saturday, October 4.
The soloist for the evening will be Trystan Llyr Griffiths.
Meanwhile, one of of the West End's biggest male stars will be coming to Llanelli at the end of this month (August).
Following the success of last summer’s 100 Voices charity variety night, Llanelli’s Dale Francis is staging a two-night show at Ffwrnes Theatre to raise cash for local charities.
Last year’s show raised money for the Welsh Guards Benevolent Fund and Ty Bryngwyn Hospice.
He hopes to increase the charity effort this year to further boost local causes.
Taking place on August 29 and 30 at Ffwrnes, the show will featuring everything from vocal talents to comedians and TV dance troupes to all round entertainers.
Swansea-born Steve Balsamo is one of featured artistes.
He made his name in the theatres of the West End and is highly regarded for one of the best portrayals of Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar.
Other stars will include Britain’s Got Talent dance acts Pre Skool and Nu Sxool.
There is also Karl Morgan from the band Who’s Molly, who has just released a single about Swansea City and has been on tour with Steps.
Local hero Denny Twp will compere the shows.
On October 4, the Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers wll present ‘The Town Remembers’ at St Elli Parish Church.
The Town Remembers will see the massed voices of the Hywel Choir, Llanelli CHoral Society, leading Welsh tenor Aled Hall, drummers, trumpeters and percussionists unite with dignitaries, armed forces and civilian personnel from across the community in the candelit and specially illuminated St. Elli Parish Church to re-tell the story and sacrifice of the great war through song, music, narration and multimedia - all under the acclaimed artistic baton of John Hywel Williams.
Highlights of the evening will include moments from Karl Jenkins’ Armed Man, Hymn to the Fallen, Ode to Remembrance, Last Post, Pie Jesu, The Lord’s Prayer, Abide with Me, Onward Christian Soldiers and popular sing-along songs from World War One.
