Llwynhendy residents rewarded for hard work
A group of eco-friendly Llwynhendy residents have been rewarded for their hard work.
Llwynhendy Environment Group received the Green Award, sponsored by Carmarthenshire County Council’s waste and recycling section, at the Radio Carmarthenshire/Scarlet FM Local Hero Awards 2012.
Communities First development officer Gillian Handscomb and project co-ordinator Lindy Butler picked up the award on behalf of the group at a glittering event at Llanelli’s Diplomat Hotel.
It was presented by Cllr Jim Jones, Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection, who helped to judge the nominations.
He said: “We were very impressed by the huge amount of good work carried out by the group for the benefit of the community. They have really made a difference to the environment in which they live and I am delighted to give them this award. The group had three separate nominations in total which just goes to show how much their efforts are appreciated.”
The group have managed to drawn down funding of more than £80,000 for projects within the Llwynhendy area.
They transformed a piece of waste land – known locally as ‘the tip’ - which had become a magnet for anti-social behaviour including fires, drinking and car crime to create growing spaces for fruit and vegetables, barbeque and grassed area for picnicking and a sensory garden. They also carried out litter-picks, held skip days, set up a food co-op and have worked closely with the local schools and residents to educate them on environmental issues such as recycling and energy use.
Gillian said: “Myself and Lindy were very humbled to receive the award on behalf of the Environment Group for everything they have done in the community and for everyone who has taken part in the various events held throughout the year.
“This award is for all the residents and volunteers that have come out and got involved and we are so thrilled to have won it. It’s just brilliant for the whole community and reflects all the hard work that has been carried out.”
