Astroturf idea for Newcastle Emlyn pitch

Research is to be carried out to discover if it is feasible to provide an Astroturf pitch at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn in Newcastle Emlyn.
Innovative Communities, part of RDP Sir Gâr’s Innovative Hubs project, has awarded a grant to Emlyn Astro Turf Pitch to conduct a feasibility study into the option of an all-weather artificial turf pitch at the school.
Innovative Communities has been funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Innovative Communities supports the trialling of new ideas that could benefit community life and has locally-based Development Officers on hand to support community groups to develop new solutions to tackle the everyday issues they face.
Up to 100 per cent funding is available to help community groups get their ideas off the ground.
These could include: implementing pilot schemes, transport and rural health initiatives, innovative childcare, time banking opportunities, broadband support schemes, community consultation exercises, development of community enterprises and a number of other innovative ideas.
Emlyn ATP formed to promote and secure community sports facilities and to improve fitness, health and wellbeing in Newcastle Emlyn and the surrounding area. There are eight members of the group and they represent the football, rugby and hockey clubs in Newcastle Emlyn and the Physical Education Department at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn.
The need for an all-weather playing and training facility has increased greatly during recent years and Emlyn ATP have commissioned the study to explore if owning an all-weather pitch and the benefits it would bring to the community are financially viable.
County Councillor Hazel Evans said: “I am delighted that we have achieved a feasibility grant for the Astroturf pitch as this is a much needed facility in the area - which I am sure the study will confirm.
“A successful sports team cannot train or arrange home games or develop for the future without it, and the whole community stands to benefit.”
