Rare chance to hear leading North Wales choir at Poppy Gala Concert

A special concert to help launch the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in South West Wales will provide a rare opportunity to hear one of the finest choirs from North Wales.
The Royal British Legion Charity Gala Concert will be staged at The Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen on Saturday, October 19.
It will feature Cantorion Colin Jones, the renowned Colin Jones singers.
Cantorion Colin Jones is a renowned North Wales choir who don’t perform in South Wales very often.
Cantorion was founded by Colin Jones in 1992 when he invited singers he knew from choirs across North Wales to join his new chorus.
He was able to match his skills in voice production and choral management with the enthusiasm and commitment of some of North Wales’s finest male choral singers and soloists and during his 15 years he established a male chorus with a special sound and quality.
The current musical director is Aled Edwards.
Aled was born in Caernarfon and educated in Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St. Asaph. After graduating in Performance ALCM,LLGM, Perf. Dip, he studied music at the University College Bangor.
He comes from a family musical tradition, his father having won the Blue Riband in the National Eisteddfod. Aled himself has been a successful competitor in many local and Urdd eisteddfodau. He is frequently called upon to adjudicate at a local and county level.
At an early age he became the accompanist for the Flint Male Voice Choir and subsequently their deputy conductor. In addition, he has been the accompanist for many other choirs and since February 2010 he has taken over as the conductor of Côr Meibion Colwyn.
One of his compositions, “Fy Mhlentyn” has been published following the success of the piece in the Côr Cymru competition.
The Cantorion choir has already introduced this beautiful piece to their repertoire following Aled becoming the Cantorion’s official Musical Director in March of this year.
Cantorion Colin Jones will share the stage at the Lyric Theatre with The Siren Sisters and The 215 City of Swansea Squadron Corps of Drums.
Mr Owens, the director of Loud Applause Productions, added: “Although this Poppy Appeal gala event is being held in Carmarthen, this is very much a South West Wales and Carmarthenshire ‘county’ event. We are hoping for a great deal of support from supporters of the Royal British Legion who will travel from far and wide for the event.
“This annual gala event is always one of the highlights of the concert year and was a sell-out at the Lyric last year, helping to give the poppy appeal a big boost.
“The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is a cause very dear to all our hearts and I hope the people of Carmarthenshire and beyond lend their support to such a worthy charity.”
The evening will close with a poignant ‘Tribute to the Fallen’ with poppies falling into the auditorium.
Mr Owens went on: “The gala concert is described as ‘a thrilling and melancholy evening with stirring and evocative music which will leave you with a lasting impression.’”
