The latest 'On Song' column for the Llanelli Star
No room at the inn for this column in the Llanelli Star this week, so here it is . . .
Four Llanelli choirs excelled themselves as they performed under the glare of the TV lights at the Ffwrnes theatre in Llanelli last week.
The special occasion saw four editions of S4C’s Noson Lawen Welsh language variety programme recorded back-to-back at Ffwrnes.
Côr Meibion Llanelli, the Hywel Girls Choir and Hywel Boys Singers, Cantata and the Ysgol y Strade choir all took part in the recording sessions on four consecutive nights.
“It was a wonderful occasion to put Llanelli in the spotlight,” said Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas.
“The shows will be broadcast later in the year. It just shows what a rich place Llanelli is for great choral singing. To have four choirs from the town featured in the TV recordings is a great achievement.”
Excitement is building for Côr Lleisiau Hardd’s big date at Ffwrnes.
All the signs are that the concert on Saturday, July 13, will be a sell-out.
The choir will be welcoming West End and Broadway star John Owen Jones, who will be making his debut Ffwrnes performance.
The 50-strong choir — comprising the senior choir and Lleisiau Hardd Bach — includes members from Llanelli, Swansea and Carmarthen and will be accompanied on the night by a five-piece band, also from Llanelli.
Future concert dates -
On Saturday, July 13, Côr Meibion Llanelli will join forces with Côr Curiad for a concert at Llangennech Church, 6.30pm. The choirs will be raising funds for the church roof appeal.
Côr Meibion Llanelli’s annual concert will be on Saturday August 3 at Y Ffwrnes. The evening is being billed as ‘Golden Voices, Golden Harp’, with the choir being joined on stage by leading Welsh soprano Gwawr Edwards and Hannah Stone, official harpist to HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.
On July 20, the choir will be singing at a special ceremony at Sandy Water Park to mark the erection of the old Stradey Park rugby posts at the park.
