Healthy Wednesday advice from the Hywel Dda Health Board

Healthy Wednesday advice from the Hywel Dda Health Board -

This Healthy Wednesday are you Screening for Life?
This Healthy Wednesday we’re supporting Public Health Wales’ brand new ‘Screening for Life’ campaign to raise awareness and highlight the importance of participating in screening programmes.
Screening for Life is a brand new health campaign run by the Screening Division of Public Health Wales.
The campaign will run during the month of July with the aim of raising awareness of the national screening programmes in Wales.
Do you know about the free screening services available to you living in Wales?
Also do you know if your GP has your up to date contact details?
Those who are eligible for screening programmes are identified from GP lists so it is important that your doctor always has your correct date of birth and contact information.
Depending on your age or gender you may be eligible for some of the following programmes:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening – invites 65 year old men who live in Wales and who are registered with a GP practice
  • Bowel screening – a home test kit is offered to men and women who live in Wales aged between 60 and 74 years old, every two years
  • Breast screening - all women of 50 years of age and over are eligible and who are registered with a GP practice
  • Cervical screening - invites women aged between 20 and 64 who live in Wales for a test every three years

Teresa Owen, Director for Public Health for Hywel Dda Health Board, said: “screening is an important public health service, which has the potential to save lives, reduce risk to health and prevent illness and disease.
“This Healthy Wednesday, in support of the Screening for Life campaign, we’re asking you to take a few minutes to find out what is available to you, and to make sure you don’t miss out by ignoring a screening invitation.”
Cancer screening is the use of simple tests in people with no symptoms, in order to help find any problems at an early stage, when treatment is more likely to be effective.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening is the best way of detecting an abdominal aortic aneurysm. This is when the wall of the aorta in the abdomen can become weak and stretch to form an aneurysm.
