Carmarthenshire hits new high for Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Carmarthenshire Council has achieved its best ever results in the number of new starters participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
In the past year, Carmarthenshire, compared to all other local authorities in Wales, has the highest number of Duke of Edinburgh’s participants in the 14-25 age group.
Furthermore, 51 young people across the county have achieved their gold awards. To celebrate this success, an awards ceremony was held at the Haliwell Centre, Carmarthen, on Tuesday, September 11.
Young people from Dyffryn Taf School, the Llanelli Open Award Group, Queen Elizabeth High School and the Air Cadets were presented with their Gold Award certificates by Mr Robert Sully, Carmarthenshire Council’s Director for Education and Children’s Services
Carmarthenshire’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Development Officer, Alison Owen-Yeates, said: “This is such a fantastic achievement for all involved in the delivery of the Award in the County, and the fact that we’ve had the highest number of completed Awards ever shows that young people are seeing the benefits of the Award and how it helps them in all aspects of lifelong learning. Congratulations to all the young people who have made this success possible and I hope we can achieve even better results in the years to come.”
Stuart White, aged 18, of Dyffryn Taf School, said: “Thanks to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, I was able to do lots of volunteering, this helped me become a Gold Sports Ambassador within the county and I was nominated to carry the Olympic Torch through Haverfordwest earlier this year.”
Carmarthenshire Council’s Executive Board Member for Education and Children’s Services, Cllr. Keith Davies added: “I am delighted with this result, both officers and young people have worked very hard to achieve this and I hope we see even more young people will participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to develop essential skills and qualities.”
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award can be undertaken by anyone aged 16-25 years. The Award gives young people the opportunity to develop skills in most aspects of work and life and helps fulfil young people’s potential.
