The latest 'Iechyd Da' beer column from Llandeilo brewer Simon Buckley

The latest 'Iechyd Da' beer column for the Carmarthen Journal newspaper, written by award-winning brewer Simon Buckley, chief executive of Llandeilo-based Evan-Evans Brewery Well, dear readers, it’s summer time; time for golden beers, lazy days and the thrill of trying new beers. Time for the brewery cricket team to find their kit and get ready for the Llandeilo ‘Ashes’ series (more of that in due course) and time for you to try some great ales from Wales at the Great W-Ales Beer Festival in Cardiff. The inaugural W-Ales Beer Festival is being held at Cardiff’s massive Millennium Stadium between June 5 and 7. Generally, the current market is difficult, and I sometime wonder if the economic recovery actually is getting to us in the regions? For your Llandeilo brewer, however, we are having one of the best years we have had in a very long time. But why are we succeeding where others are finding it difficult? We have now built our business predominantly outside Wales. Whi...

Cwmgors RFC claim SWALEC Division 4 South West title

Image
Cwmgors RFC have lifted the SWALEC Division 4 South West trophy after a convincing (34 – 7) home win over Pyle RFC last week (Wednesday 14th May 2014). The win came as a relief for the boys, who unexpectedly lost against Cwmavon RFC the week before – going down by four points and keeping the title just out of reach for another week. Despite the hold-up at Cwmavon, Cwmgors have had a great season, winning all but two of the league games that they’ve played. Cwmgors RFC’s league victory has been aided by the impressive boot of fly-half Steff Rees - the club’s top points scorer - who broke a club record this season by scoring 338 points. Rees was also quick on his feet in crossing the gain line as he was also crowned the club’s top try scorer, alongside Lloyd Watson with 11 tries each. Steff Rees said the Cwmgors players were delighted with their second championship success in successive seasons, having taking the Division 5 title last year. He said: “It means everything. It’s a close ...

Four members of the Clay Shaw Butler team will be drinking water only for two weeks as part of a campaign to raise money for the RNLI, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. "All caffeine products are off the menu - and there's no wine," said Clay Shaw Butler director David Butler. "It will be water, H20 Only, for two weeks starting on Tuesday, May 27. "Obviously, the main aim will be to raise money for the RNLI, a very worthwhile charity which helps save lives at sea. "We're being sponsored by friends, colleagues and customers for the duration of the H20 Only challenge. My guess is that at the end of two weeks we will also be feeling a lot healthier as well." Kind hearted comedians plan massive ‘Cwtsh’ for cancer victim Beth

Image
Funnyman Phil Evans and his friends are getting together this weekend for a special show to raise money for a Porthcawl woman who needs a life-extending operation in Germany. The show, at the Hi Tide Inn, Porthcawl, on Saturday, May 24, is being organised as a massive ‘Cwtsh’ (Welsh hug) for Beth Margetson. Beth is a victim of the so-called ‘postcode lottery system’ that currently exists in the UK. The type of treatment Beth needs to treat her cancer is currently unavailable in Wales, but is available in England. Her latest plan to attack the cancer involves her travelling to Germany in June for a life-extending operation. “Beth is a wonderfully warm and giving person who has contributed a huge amount to her community over the years,” said comedian Phil, who is known throughout Wales as the man who puts the ‘cwtsh’ into comedy. “Beth worked tirelessly as a community midwife serving Porthcawl, Bridgend and the surrounding communities. Along the way, we reckon she has delivered 2000...

Helping hand for Carmarthen gardening project

Image
A gardening project, set up for young people in Carmarthen, has been given a helping hand to become greener. Growing Green Teens is a Dr M’z gardening project which teaches young people how to grow their own fruit and vegetables in a plot at Five Fields Allotment. The project has received two compost bins from Carmarthenshire County Council’s recycling team. After winning the People’s Millions award last November, Dr M’z were able to employ youth worker Debbie Cox to develop the Growing Green Teens project. Gayle Harris, project manager at Dr M’z said: “The project aims to encourage young people to grow their own vegetables, which in turn, will help them to develop their skills. We’re hoping to have a bumper crop this year which the young people will then be able to cook and make meals with. “We’ve been able to compost most of what has been cleared from the plot but not only are we composting what’s on the allotment but also vegetable peelings from the Dr M’z cafe.” The project teach...
