Cycle shelters boost for Carmarthen
Cycle shelters will soon be available for workers at three of Carmarthen’s major public sector employers.
The county council’s planning committee yesterday approved applications for three bike shelters, each with the capacity for eight bicycles at the Mid and West Wales Fire Headquarters in Lime Grove Avenue, Dyfed Powys Police Headquarters in Llangunnor and University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
The planning applications were submitted by the county council technical services department as part of a scheme to encourage sustainable forms of travel.
Council transport policy and programme engineer Simon Charles said: “The council bid for Sustainable Travel Centre money from the Welsh Assembly Government to improve sustainable transport options in and around Carmarthen town. We were successful in drawing down £500,000 which is being spent on various initiatives.
“We set aside a certain amount of money to improve walking and cycling facilities at key employment sites in the town.
“We approached major public sector employers within the town and invited them to take part in a mini bid for cycling facilities. These three were successful.”
