Llanelli Rotarians hear about prison life

Image
Members of Llanelli Rotary were given a hugely informative talk about the workings of the prison service when they held their weekly meeting at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. The talk was given by two members of Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) service, David Richards and Tarul Clement. Mr Richards gave his address from the perspective of his work at Swansea Prison in Oystermouth Road, Swansea. Mr Clement is deputy controller at Parc Prison in Bridgend, which is run by G4S, so he was able to provide a view from the private prison sector. Mr Richards, left, and Mr Clement, right, are pictured with Llanelli Rotary Club president Ken Abban. Website - http://llanellirotary.com

Councillors visit Capel Iwan hall project

Image
Two of Carmarthenshire’s senior councillors have visited Capel Iwan to see how a rural community hall is about to benefit from a Rural Grant to improve their facilities. The new executive board member for rural affairs Cllr Jim Jones and the executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell called at Y Ganolfan, Capel Iwan, called in to see the plans that have been drawn up for the improvements. It is hoped that new facilities including a baby changing unit and disabled toilet will broaden the appeal for more community groups to use the hall. Y Ganolfan is run by an active voluntary committee formed in 1987 that oversee the daily running of the hall as well as organising various events throughout the year. Since the recent closure of the local primary school, Y Ganolfan is now the only community venue available for hosting community activities and events so the need for better facilities that can cater for all types of occasions is even more of a necessity. Carmarthenshire’s Leader has pledged his support for the Not in my Name campaign. Cllr Kevin Madge has offered to be one of the male ambassadors who will speak out against violence towards women as part of the campaign. Joyce Watson AM, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, along with The National Federation of Women’s Institutes-Wales, are urging groups, organisations and associations across the country to pledge their support. Figures show that one in four women in Wales will experience domestic violence at the hands of a partner during their lifetime, and 150,000 women in Wales will suffer some form of gender-based violence. Men and boys are encouraged to pledge their support to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence by wearing a white ribbon around White Ribbon Day, November 25, the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women. Cllr Madge will be attending a candlelit service at St David’s Cathedral on White Ribbon Day to show his support. He sai
