Hywel Dda University Health Board has announced the three finalists in the ‘Improving the Patient Experience’ category at this year’s Best of Health staff awards. The Best of Health awards are organised annually by the University Health Board to recognise and reward the extraordinary achievements of its staff and volunteers, many of whom often go beyond the call of duty in their work for the benefit of patients and service users. This year, 100 entries were received from across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. The winners will be announced at the Best of Health Awards ceremony, sponsored by Health Shield at Parc Y Scarlets in Llanelli on Friday 16 January. Lisa Gostling, Director of Workforce & Organisational Development said: “These nominations reflect just some of the high quality patient care provided by many of our staff and volunteers and highlight the fantastic efforts and achievements above and beyond their normal day-to-day work. I wish all the nominees the ve

Resolve to save energy in Carmarthenshire!

Image
Anyone making a new year’s resolution to save money is being encouraged by Carmarthenshire County Council to start at home, and consider signing up to a collective energy switch. Working on the concept of ‘people power’, the more people who sign up to the Cyd Cymru collective switching scheme, the better deal they’ll be able to strike with national energy providers to drive down their electricity bills. Registrations for the spring 2015 switch open on January 2, and all people need to do is register at www.cydcymru-energy.com or call 0800 093 5902. Signing up is easy, with a few simple questions about current household energy costs that can be found on a recent bill. The council’s Deputy Leader and Anti-Poverty Champion, Cllr Pam Palmer, is urging people to give it some thought. “There is absolutely nothing to lose, but potentially a lot to gain,” she said. “This is essentially a ‘bulk-buy’ where people group together with others in order to secure a better deal. “At a time when ene

Despite the fact the 1963 prisoner-of-war classic has as much to do with Santa Claus as raging myxomatosis has to do with the Easter Bunny, it’s a regular fixture in the Christmas schedules. This time around it was on Five USA. TV executives could be accused of lazy programming, filling-up several hours with a 50-year old film. But what’s wrong with spending a cold winter’s afternoon settled on the sofa watching an old movie full of big name stars, action, excitement, humour...and that incredible motorcycle leap over the barbed-wire fence at the climax? Whatever your feelings about war films, without doubt it’s a rock solid piece of screen entertainment with a brilliant screenplay and the sure hand of Hollywood veteran John Sturges at the helm. I make a
