Jenkins Bakery celebrates National Doughnut Week

Image
The Jenkins Bakery is doing its bit to help a mammoth charity fund-raising effort during National Doughnut Week (May 11-18). For seven days every year, bakers up and down the country sell doughnuts to raise money for The Children's Trust, a national charity which provides specialist care and rehabilitation for children with multiple disabilities. The Llanelli-based bakery is one of a handful of bakery businesses in Wales participating in the scheme. “We are a family business and always keen to put something back into the community,” said Russell Jenkins, operations director of the Jenkins Bakery. “We have taken part in National Doughnut Week for a number of years and we will be doing our best to make sure that staff and customers can have a bit of fun raising cash for a very worthwhile charity.” Over the last 20 years, National Doughnut Week has raised more than £735,000. In 2013, the target is to raise at least £30,000. National Doughnut Week is sponsored by leading bakery

The farmers of Wales look to the future

Image
The Future Farmers of Wales saw state of the art farming facilities and heard of innovative research at Aberystwyth University recently as the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) hosted a visit. The visitors had the opportunity to learn how sound, research based science undertaken in Aberystwyth is applied for the benefit of future agriculture in Wales. The Future Farmers of Wales Club is an organisation where all invited members have either won industry or academic awards or have achieved outstanding success within Welsh agriculture. As such, they are a very influential and forward looking group. Professor Jamie Newbold, Director of Research and Enterprise at IBERS delivered a short presentation on both the research currently taking place within IBERS and the continuous professional training opportunities available through the Advanced Training Partnership (ATP). The aim of the BBSRC funded Advanced Training Partnerships is to strengthen specialist s

Countdown to second International Fascination of Plants Day

Image
Saturday May 18 is the second International Fascination of Plants Day. Events that celebrate plants will take place all over the globe thanks to this initiative led by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). In Aberystwyth, staff from Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) will be leading the event. The aim of the day is to fascinate and enthuse everyone about plants and the importance of plant science for agriculture, forestry, horticulture, food, paper, timber, chemicals, energy, and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message. There will be interactive exhibits at Aberystwyth Arts Centre and the University Botany Garden glasshouse will be open from 10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. Visitors can take a guided tour or wander through the glasshouse themselves. Dr Julie Hofer, Research Scientist at IBERS and organiser of the event said, “Plants are fundamental to our existence, providing

Debut for a new cooking star at Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli

A revolutionary new, made-in-Wales, cooking appliance will be making its ‘debut’ at Parc y Scarlets rugby stadium in Llanelli. The wraps are due to come off the LoCooker – a new concept in cooking. Three members of the Clyne Energy Ltd team behind the project are huge Scarlets rugby fans. “West is best, is what we all like to say at Parc y Scarlets,” said Clyne Energy chairman Professor Ken Board. “We think we’ve got a product that lines up there as a world-beating idea, so what better place to showcase our new invention than Parc y Scarlets? “The LoCooker is something we are very proud to call a ‘made-in-Wales’ idea. It was invented here in Wales and it is being built here in Llanelli. “Llanelli has been synonymous with great achievements in rugby. Now we want Llanelli to build a similar reputation for invention and manufacturing excellence.” The LoCooker brings a new approach to cooking a wide range of food. It operates by a unique combination of water spray, water vapour and conve
