Aberystwyth scientists support first ever all Wales ‘Fire Ride’

Scientists at Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) are supporting Wales’ Fire and Rescue Service personnel in their charity bike ride to raise £15,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity and Wales Air Ambulance. The sports physiologists at IBERS are advising the team on the best way to prepare in relation to energy and fluid replacement strategies for the 14-day event. The very first ‘Fire Ride’ is a bike ride that links up all of Wales’ 152 Fire Stations, and will take place over 14 days between 22nd May – and the 4th June 2015. A core team of riders will complete the full 1350-mile ride, and hundreds more are expected to support and join in the challenge by completing individual stages of the event. The course will cover Wales' beautiful landscapes and joining up all of the fire service communities around the country. Sinfonia Cymru 'Go Baroque' with Rachel Podger

Wales’s leading chamber orchestra Sinfonia Cymru will be teaming up with one of the UK’s foremost specialists in Baroque music for a tour to three venues across South Wales this month. Guest Director and violinist Rachel Podger will join the orchestra for performances of music by Bach, Purcell, Vivaldi and Telemann at The Ffwrnes, Llanelli (Friday 29 May), The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Saturday 30 May) and The Riverfront, Newport (Sunday 31 May). The all-baroque programme is a new venture for the orchestra and as General Manager Sophie Lewis says, “we could not have asked for a better person to direct us through the music of the period than Rachel. President Carol Ramaya and members of Lampeter Rotary Club will be celebrating 45 years of service in the community in 2015. The club is holding its 45th Charter Night at the Grannell Hotel, Llanwnnen, on Friday, May 29, 7.00 for 7.30pm. The latest 'On Song' column (about the choral scene in and around Llanelli) from the Llanelli Star - Côr Meibion Llanelli (Llanelli Male Voice Choir) will be holding a special concert with The Three Welsh Tenors at the Selwyn Samuel Centre on Sunday, July 12. And they will also be joined by some extra special guests – Llangennech Junior School choir. The school choir performed admirably in the recent Songs of Praises competition and will be doing their best to outshine the other performers on stage.
