Councillors visit Capel Iwan hall project
Two of Carmarthenshire’s senior councillors have visited Capel Iwan to see how a rural community hall is about to benefit from a Rural Grant to improve their facilities.
The new executive board member for rural affairs Cllr Jim Jones and the executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell called at Y Ganolfan, Capel Iwan, called in to see the plans that have been drawn up for the improvements.
It is hoped that new facilities including a baby changing unit and disabled toilet will broaden the appeal for more community groups to use the hall.
Y Ganolfan is run by an active voluntary committee formed in 1987 that oversee the daily running of the hall as well as organising various events throughout the year.
Since the recent closure of the local primary school, Y Ganolfan is now the only community venue available for hosting community activities and events so the need for better facilities that can cater for all types of occasions is even more of a necessity. A number of groups currently enjoy the use of this facility including Capel Iwan YFC, Merched y Wawr, Cymdeithas Gymraeg, Community Council, French Club and Archery club.
The hall has been recently awarded £18,156 Capital funding from the Rural Development Programme - Rural Community Inclusion Project by the Executive Board Member Cllr Meryl Gravell.
The group will provide their own reserves of over £4,500 as match funding for the RCI grant to build a small extension at the front of the building and to provide a changing room, baby changing unit and a disabled toilet.
This will enable new and additional activities to be held at the venue, such as keep fit classes and mother & toddler sessions, and will ensure the future sustainability of Y Ganolfan as a rural community resource.
Rural Community Inclusion, delivered by the council’s Community Regeneration section, comprises of a package of support designed to help increase the availability and accessibility of basic services and facilities in rural communities. It is delivered in partnership with Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr in this Rural Hub.
Hall committee secretary Ken Davies said he was very grateful to the county council and Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr for their support to improve the facilities.
“The committee was unanimous to get on with this project. We hope it till ensure that the building is used to its full potential. It is an important resource for the whole community.”
Cllr Jim Jones said: “I’m pleased we are able to help the hall committee to improve the facilities at Y Ganolfan Capel Iwan which will help to secure its future.”
Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “Y Ganolfan is a marvellous community facility and the improvements planned will make it that much more attractive to the community and groups.”
