Trinity venture scores goal in Carmarthen

An innovative new community venture run by Trinity University College has scored a major goal with Carmarthen’s soccer community.
Trinity has formed a partnership with Welsh Premier League side Carmarthen Town AFC under its Widening Access scheme.
The scheme’s aims are to forge community links and provide young people with inspiration to make further strides in higher education.
“It really is a ‘Win-Win’ project,” said Ryan Evans, deputy head of the Students’ Union at the university.
“Trinity gets great benefit and satisfaction in setting up community links through Widening Access and clubs like Carmarthen Town feel the benefit of our support.”
Mr Evans’s job with the Students Union is to focus on the world of sport.
“Trinity has been very pleased to support one of the youth teams at Carmarthen Town AFC with sponsored kit.
“In return, the Reserves of Carmarthen Town are able to use our playing facilities at Johnstown on either Saturday or Sunday.
“We also get the services of one of their coaches on a regular basis for our coaching sessions on a Monday night. Usually, it has been Steffan Davies, who has been a great help in getting the Trinity side ready for matches.”
Mr Evans, who coaches for Newcastle Emlyn football team, added: “I know the value of getting someone to give up their time to attend coaching sessions. I help a team further down the divisions from Carmarthen Town, so it is a great boost to Trinity to have support from the staff of a Welsh Premier League side like Carmarthen.
“Hopefully, this link between Trinity and Carmarthen will go from strength to strength. Some of our players have played for Carmarthen Reserves. I would like to think we could build on that and one day and see faces from Trinity appearing in the first team.”
Meri Huws, director of Innovation, Skills and Community at Trinity University College said that she took great pride in the Widening Access project.
She said: “We place great emphasis in Trinity in reaching out to the community as whole.
“It is important that we place great store in inspiring young people and raising their aspirations for higher education.
“Widening Access is a venture which takes simple practical steps to make sure we are always looking forward to improving our educational links with the community.”
Robert Lloyd, the vice-president of Carmarthen Town AFC, said the club greatly appreciated the partnership with Trinity.
“The sporting facilities and the health laboratory at Trinity are excellent facilities and we are grateful that Trinity University staff have shown such whole-hearted commitment to building on the link between the university and the club.
“I am sure the youngsters of Carmarthen Town AFC appreciate the support of Trinity and I am sure it also helps the youth of today focus on the world of higher education. It is important for our youngsters to have aspirations and this scheme with Trinity will nurture those hopes and ambitions for the future.
“Trinity and Carmarthen Town AFC are very alike in caring passionately about playing roles in the wider community. We rely heavily on the support of the local community and it is great to feel a project like this is putting something back into the wider world to secure a better future for our youngsters.”
