Trinity plays key role in tourism awards
Trinity University College in Carmarthen played a key role in the first Carmarthenshire Tourism Awards.
The university helped sponsor the glittering awards and also saw its students scoop major prizes.
The awards took place in spectacular style. A ‘who's who’ of the tourism industry gathered at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli for an evening to celebrate and raise the profile of the importance of the industry in the county.
The event was organised by the Carmarthenshire Tourist Association (CTA) with partners the Carmarthen Journal, Llanelli Star and Carmarthenshire Council.
The categories of interest to Trinity were as follows –
Unsung hero award, sponsored by Trinity University College
Winner: Lowri Jones, Carmarthen Tourist Information Centre.
The finalists were: Delyth Lynch, Angel Hotel and Heavenly, Llandeilo; Lowri Jones, Carmarthen Tourist Information Centre, and Margaret Juster, Abermarlais Caravan Park, Llangadog.
Nominated by owners of bed and breakfasts. Lowri, who works in the Tourist Information Centre in Lammas Street said of her job: "I love it. It's great.
"You get to meet and greet the visitors to the area. I'm overwhelmed with the award, it's lovely."
And she explained her working ethos: Every customer is important, locals and visitors.
"I greet them with enthusiasm, a friendly face and a smile."
Tourism student of the year award, sponsored by Trinity University College
Winner: Rhian Jones.
The finalists were: The finalists included Rhian Jones, Sara Fox and Helen Sweeney.
Students from Trinity University College were considered for this award for their dedication and commitment of work.
Rhian, from Carmarthen, graduated with an MBA in tourism management last year.
The 24-year-old balanced her studies with her demands working as a nurse.
She said: "I was shocked when they announced my name.
"I'm not ruling out working in the tourism industry in the future, but I hope to go into occupational therapy - caring for people is what I'm passionate about.
"I wasn't expecting to win this award, but I'm really proud of it. I never win anything!"
