Llandovery pupils on crest of a wave!
Llandovery school pupils are riding high on the crest of a wave after raising over £750 for Children in Need by rowing around the world – twice!
Children from years seven and eight at Ysgol Pantycelyn clocked up an impressive 108,036 meters - that’s twice the circumference of the globe - by using rowing machines in their lunch hours.
They were supported in their feat by Carmarthenshire County Council 5x60 sports development officers, who work with young people to encourage them to take part in extra curricular physical activities.
5x60 is a Sports Council for Wales initiative funded by the Welsh Assembly and delivered by local authorities.
Since September 2008, all of Carmarthenshire’s 14 mainstream secondary schools have been introduced to the scheme, which aims to give pupils ownership of the sporting opportunities available to them.
Lyn Broderick, 5x60 officer for Carmarthenshire, said: “The pupils did a fantastic job, and tackled the rowing attempt with huge enthusiasm.
“They had planned to row the equivalent of one trip around the world, but actually achieved twice this feat raising over £750 for Children In Need over the period of a week.”
