Carway's Charlene wins award
Charlene Davies, Chairperson of Carmarthenshire Youth Council (CYC), has won a prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award for her hard work, commitment and dedication to the work of the Youth Council.
The award, presented by Carmarthenshire Association of Voluntary Services (CAVS), recognizes the outstanding voluntary work of young people in the County.
Since being nominated as Chairperson in April 2008, Charlene, of Carway, has ensured that the voices of young people in the County have been listened to and has brought about positive change for young people.
Charlene has been instrumental in organizing and running successful events such as Councillor Speed Dating events, Residentials and Youth Conferences that have given young people the opportunity to express their concerns and to have a say on issues affecting them.
Charlene is busy representing young people in a variety of different meetings as well as working closely with the Carmarthenshire Children and Young People’s Partnership (CYPP); she has even met with PM Gordon Brown and the UK Cabinet in a recent meeting in Cardiff, all with the aim of ensuring young people are using their right to have a say and to be listened to.
Executive Board Member for Children and Education Services, Councillor Gwynne Wooldridge said:
“Charlene was nominated for the award as recognition for all her enthusiasm and dedication to promoting youth participation across the county; she has led the CYC from strength to strength over the past two years and has been greatly involved in developing and facilitating School Council Training, Children’s Rights Workshops and Participation Workshops in Partnership with the CYPP.
“She is an inspiration to young people and I’m confident she will continue to lead Carmarthenshire Youth Council
Charlene Davies added:“I am very proud to have won the award - I did not expect it. I hope it encourages more young people to volunteer in their communities and achieve what I have achieved."
