Art and breakfast in Carmarthenshire

Children across Carmarthenshire have been creating works of art while tucking in to their breakfast.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Catering Service has been running a colouring competition in its 105 primary school breakfast clubs, in conjunction with Farmhouse Breakfast Week (January 25-29).
Infant pupils were provided with a breakfast colouring sheet, and junior pupils were asked to design a poster highlighting the importance of a healthy breakfast before the school day.
The winning entries will be displayed in the county’s breakfast clubs, and prizes are being offered for the most imaginative and colourful pictures.
Sandra Weigel, Catering Services Manager, said: “Breakfast Farmhouse Week is all about promoting a good wholesome start to the day. By organising a colouring competition we were able to encourage pupils to have a healthy breakfast while undertaking an enjoyable activity and keeping them entertained.”
Carmarthenshire County Council has one of the highest uptakes of breakfast clubs in Wales.
Run by the Carmarthenshire Catering Service, the Primary Free Breakfast Initiative is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
The clubs are open from approximately 8am, and pupils can enjoy a free breakfast consisting of a choice of non sugar-coated cereal, toast, fruit and a glass of milk or fruit juice.
As well as making sure children have had a healthy and balanced start to their day, which helps them to concentrate better in the classroom, the clubs also provide an extra service to parents who can drop their children off earlier at school.
Cllr Gwynne Wooldridge, executive board member for education and children’s services, added: “I’m sure the children have enjoyed taking part in this colouring competition. I have been fortunate to attend a few breakfast clubs in different parts of the county, and it’s always great to see the children having fun and going in to school with a smile.”
