Ammanford youngsters get boxing chance

Young people from the Ammanford Smart Project are taking part in a demanding boxing programme to help improve fitness, discipline and self esteem.
The group meet on Thursdays at Prizefighter’s Gym, Carmarthen, and are trained by Commonwealth Silver medallist, Kevin Evans.
The project is supported by Carmarthenshire Council’s Youth Service and the Amman Neighbourhood Policing Team; the aim of the partnership working is to break down any barriers between young people and the police.
Ammanford's Smart Coordinator said: “The young people are getting a lot out of these sessions and we’ve seen a difference in their attitudes already.
“The sessions at Prizefighter’s Gym have helped motivate the young people and during the sessions they are able to deal with their aggression.”
Police community officer Sharee Treharne added:“It’s great to work with the young people and to show them that our aim isn’t to keep penalising them but to work together and help with any issues that might be affecting them.
“We’re extremely grateful to Kevin Evans for giving us the opportunity to work together and to help the young people develop self respect and to help them aim for something positive.”
