Marie Curie Ambassador talks to Llanelli Rotary Club

Llanelli-based Simon Evans, an Ambassador for Wales for Marie Curie Cancer Care, was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli.
Mr Evans, a familiar figure in Llanelli for his work as a 'greeter' at Asda superstore in the town centre, was welcomed to the club by Vice President Sue Roberts, who chaired the meeting in the absence of President Hywel Bassett.
Mr Evans gave a very interesting and comprehensive account of the work of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity in Wales.
He stressed that the public should remember that one in three of us will be touched by cancer.
The Marie Curie charity is dependent on volunteers and donations.
Marie Curie Cancer Care is a leading provider of end of life care in Wales
In 2012-13, 177 Marie Curie Nurses worked in communities across the country, along with the charity's hospice in Penarth, near Cardiff.
Between 2012-13, Marie Curie Nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals will have cared for just under 2,000 people with a terminal illness as well as provide support for their families.
The care provided is free of charge and available to anyone with any terminal illness.
In particular, the charity puts great store in the belief that everyone should have the choice to die at home.
As a world leader in researching better ways to care for patients at the end of life, the charity also campaigns for better end of life care in Wales.
The charity provides funding to support the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Centre, Cardiff.
As well as developing its own research portfolio, the centre aims to support and advise researchers from around Wales and the rest of the UK in study development.
The charity needs to raise more than £4 million per year to fund its hospice and nursing care in Wales, which is also supported by local health boards.
