Hywel Dda team thanks Maggie Davies and University for support

Hywel Dda University Health Board’s preparation to introduce Midwifery Led Units at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen and at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest has been supported by an expert midwife over the past few months.
Maggie Davies, Consultant Midwife at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University HB, has more than 40 years of experience and has been on hand to provide expert advice and support to midwives working in Hywel Dda.
Head of Midwifery and Women’s Health, Catherine Cotter, said: “Midwife Led Units are designed for women who want to deliver in a homely and relaxed atmosphere whilst being cared for by midwives who are experts in normal births and throughout the process Maggie’s insight and experience in introducing Midwife Led Units has been invaluable to us during our planning and preparation. I’d like to thank her for her expert advice and for the time taken to support our midwives.
“By sharing her experiences of establishing the highly thought of Birth Centre in Neath and Port Talbot Hospital, our midwife teams have had an opportunity to see the positive impact that the hard work of recent months will have on the experiences of mums-to-be in the future.”
Ahead of the introduction of the Midwife Led Units on Monday, Maggie visited Withybush Hospital to see the final preparations take place.
Maggie Davies, Consultant Midwife at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University HB said: “Midwives are the experts and can look after and deliver a safe service for local women experiencing a normal pregnancy. The past few weeks I have been working with an excellent team of staff providing training and direction and they are now ready to establish and develop this excellent midwifery service for local women.”
Janine Wyn Davies, Head of Midwifery Education at University South Wales, said: “Input from the university working alongside clinicians has been invaluable for the transition to a birth centre. We know birth centres work, we know they are safe for women and babies and we have the data and statistics to support this.”
