Life Skills project launched in Carmarthenshire

An exciting new project aimed at helping parents and carers is being launched in rural Carmarthenshire next week.
The first session of Sgiliau Byw (Life Skills) will take place at the Cylch Meithrin in Llanddarog on Monday November 7. This is an innovative project working with parents, carers and pre-school children to improve literacy, numeracy, communication and general parenting skills through a series of activities which emphasise learning through fun.
Sgiliau Byw will take place over six weekly sessions which are based on specific themes, including basic cookery, living a healthy lifestyle, exercising and keeping fit, sharing books and stories and singing nursery rhymes.
Sgiliau Byw project manager Nerys Burton, of Menter Cwm Gwendraeth, said: “We will be working in pre-school settings including mother and toddler groups, family centres, community centres, heath centres and other community venues in villages and market towns across the county to enable all parents to have the opportunity to attend if they wish.
“The sessions are free and full of fun packed activities. Each parent will be given a free Sgiliau Byw information pack, which will include a bilingual recipe book and a CD and song book. These resources can then be used by parents/carers at home.”
There will also be an opportunity for potential volunteers to receive training to enable them to provide Sgiliau Byw classes in their own communities.
Project assistant Hayley Price said: “We are hoping that Sgiliau Byw will help support and strengthen healthy social networks as a means of creating a more sustainable community. “
Sgiliau Byw is part of RDP Sir Gâr’s Innovative Hubs scheme. The project is funded through the Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales 2007 – 2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
