Sheltered housing boost for William

Pensioner William Dix is one of the older people in Carmarthenshire being helped to stay independent for longer by moving into sheltered housing.
Mr Dix, of Llanelli, who is 76, recently moved into sheltered housing at Llwyn yr Ynys, Llwynhendy, from a three-bedroom council house.
He said: “I was living on my own and am very pleased with my new home. I’m still living in the same community and am able to keep in contact with family and friends.
“I had difficulty climbing stairs and steps and had a large garden that needed looking after. It will be far easier for me to manage here.”
The council offers a range and options to support older people safely and securely in their own homes enabling then to enjoy life with dignity and respect. It is however recognised that staying in the family home is not always possible. In instances where age or illness make it impossible to remain in a larger home the council and a couple of Housing Association partners offer alternative housing within Sheltered Housing Schemes.
Sheltered housing allows older people to remain within their community in their own homes. They still keep their privacy and independence whilst having the right level of support from a Sheltered Scheme Officer who will provide information about housing, support and care services provided by a wide range of statutory and voluntary organisations.
In order to release two and three bedroom houses for families with children who may be living in overcrowded or unfit accommodation, or are homeless, the council and its Housing Association partners encourage and assist their tenants to move into smaller more manageable accommodation.
Further information about Sheltered Housing can be obtained from your Area Housing Team: Amman Gwendraeth on 01558 825408; Towy Teifi and Taf Myrddin on 01267 228603; Llanelli on 01554 742350.

Pensioner William Dix enjoys a cup of tea in his new home with sheltered scheme officer Lynette Williams.
