The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star

The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star -

All eyes are likely to be on the big Lesley Garrett Llanelli Choral Society concert at Ffwrnes Theatre this weekend, but it is also a busy time for some of our other local choirs.
During the afternoon on Saturday (October 12), Côr Meibion Llanelli will be performing at a special Open Day to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Llanelli Hospice at Ty Brynwgyn at Prince Philip Hospital.
“We have always enjoyed a very close association with the hospice and our choir members work hard to support this worthy cause at every available opportunity,” said Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas.
Friday, November 15, sees the choir perform at their ‘annual fixture’ for the Llanelli Hospice Appeal Festival of Light in the St Elli Shopping Centre.
“This is always a wonderful occasion and always attracts a big crowd to the St Elli Shopping Centre,” said Mr Thomas.
On Saturday, October 19, Côr Meibion Llanelli perform at the Gethin Hughes Memorial Bursary Concert at Greenfield Chapel in Llanelli.
Mr Thomas added: “This is a very emotional event for the choir as Gethin Hughes was our accompanist for many years. He was ‘Mr Music’ in Llanelli and was awarded the MBE for his services to charity.
“We have a cash bursary up for grabs for the winner of the first Gethin Hughes Memorial award, so it very much follows in the footsteps of Gethin’s work by putting something back into the community.”
On November 16, Côr Meibion Llanelli will be taking part in a glamorous evening with the stars in Ffwrnes.
The concert will be in aid of Wales’s pancreatic cancer charity Amser Justin Time. Shan Cothi, who set up the charity in memory of her late husband, will be headlining the evening.
Shan will be joined by the very popular baritone Mark Llewelyn Evans.
Mark will be performing some songs from his new album ‘This Guy’s in Love’.
Also performing will be the young up and coming musical theatre star Samuel Morris.
Sam is 17 and currently a sixth form student at Ysgol Gyfun Y Strade. Earlier this year, to great acclaim, Samuel played the role of Marius in SA15 Stage School’s production of Les Miserables at Ffwrnes.
Meanwhile, Cor Meibion Dyffryn Tywi are organising a night of Irish and Welsh singing on Wednesday, October 23.
It will take place at 7pm at the Red Lion in Llandyfaelog.
The guest artists include Irish folk singers Darren Crossey and the duo Stephen’s Green.
