Eco Schools programme delight for Carmarthenshire
Carmarthenshire has the highest number of Platinum and Green Flag schools in Wales under the Eco Schools programme.
The Platinum award is the highest accolade possible under Eco Schools and is the equivalent to achieving four Green Flags - an eco-label for environmental education and performance.
There are now 15 schools in Carmarthenshire to be awarded Platinum status and 75 schools have achieved the Green Flag – both are the highest in Wales in any one authority.
The county is consistently above the national average with 61% of schools achieving their first Green Flag (compared to the national average of 49%); 49% their second Green Flag (the national average 37%); 30% their third Green Flag (national average 20%) and 12% their fourth Green Flag or Platinum award (national average seven per cent).
Welcoming the figures, Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Colin Evans, said: “The Eco Schools programme comes under my remit as part of waste and recycling and I am delighted with these latest figures which show that Carmarthenshire is yet again leading the way in Wales in environmental issues.

“A lot of work is going on in our schools to become as environmentally-friendly as possible and this includes reducing energy consumption, recycling and composting as much of their rubbish as possible, keeping their communities clean and safe, walking, cycling or taking the bus to school to reduce car journeys, eating healthily and taking regular exercise.
“The staff and pupils are an example to us all and if we all took a leaf out of their book, we would have a cleaner, greener, safer and healthier Carmarthenshire.
“I would like to congratulate all those involved with the Eco Schools programme and wish continued success for the future.”
In Carmarthenshire, the Eco Schools programme is a partnership between the council, Keep Wales Tidy and the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Pupils study topics including waste, litter, energy, water, transport, healthy living and global citizenship.
