New chief executive at Aberglasney

A self-confessed member of the Aberglasney Fan Club has been appointed Chief Executive of The Aberglasney Restoration Trust.
Roger Evans, of Typicca, Dryslwyn, is known throughout Wales for his work in the agriculture industry.
“It seems that Aberglasney has been in the background for most of my life and I am one the biggest fans of the gardens,” said 59-year-old Mr Evans.
“It has always been a place close to my heart and I am looking forward immensely to taking on the role of chief executive.”
Welsh-speaking Mr Evans, who takes over from Paul Stait, was awarded an OBE in 1996 for services to Welsh agriculture.
He added: “As a Tywi Valley boy, I have had links with Aberglasney for very many years and I am delighted to have this opportunity to be part of the continuing development of the house and the gardens.”
A graduate of Agricultural Economics at University College of Wales Aberystwyth, Mr Evans has farmed at Dryslwyn for more than 30 years. He was the South Wales Board Member of the Milk Marketing Board, Chairman of the UK Dairy Council and Chairman of Milk Marque Ltd.
He has extensive corporate governance experience over a period of more than 25 years. He is a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society and he is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Community Foods Group Ltd.
A member of the Wales Lands Tribunal, he stands down this year as Chairman of the Welsh Assembly Appeals Panel.
Mr Evans added: “Having attended Llangathen Primary School near Aberglasney, I had first-hand experience of seeing Aberglasney fall into ruin.
“Happily, that experience has also included the magnificent restoration of the gardens and the creation of what is truly a gem of an attraction – one of the finest in Wales - which will be enjoyed by many for years to come.
“I am very pleased to be involved with these historic gardens, which are an unique part of our heritage in the Tywi Valley and such a very special place to visit. I look forward to working closely with our experienced head gardener Joseph Atkin and our small team of dedicated staff and valued volunteers.
“Together, they make up a great team of people who help make Aberglasney House and Gardens so welcoming to visitors old and new.”
